The Anti-Monitor belonged to the cosmic race called Monitors, but eventually betrayed them and started destroying the Multiverse.
History
The Anti-Monitor used to be one of the Monitors, an advanced race that guarded the infinite Multiverse. The Anti-Monitor however eventually decided to destroy the Multiverse and begun a campaign that obliterated countless number of universes. The heroes of the multiverse banded together with the Monitors to stop him. In the end, the Anti-Monitor was defeated after his race sacrificed every single member except Nix Uotan. The crisis also resulted in the death of Supergirl of Earth-0 and other heroes. Only 52 universes survived and underwent change, existing in a delicate balance.[1]
