Anubis is the God of Death and guardian of the Egyptian Underworld.[2]
History
Anubis is the adulterous son of Osiris and Nephthys,[3] acting as his father's assistant in the judgment of souls in the Underworld. At the entrance to Da'at, the Egyptian underworld, Anubis weighs the heart of the deceased in the scales of justice: if the heart is heavier than the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of justice, the soul will be devoured by the crocodile-headed goddess Ammit; but if not, the soul has a free passage into the afterlife.[2]
Modern era
In the modern era as the gods of the Egyptian pantheon and their power waned, Anubis was one of the few who possessed formidable power and sought to elevate his station. Knowing those of pharaoh lineage could oppose him, he targeted the Nassour bloodline. As he attempted to kill a young Muhammed Nassour and his father, the elder Nassour sealed Anubis away with a prayer a Pharaoh can invoke to banish Anubis back to the house of the dead, but at the cost of his own life and a traumatized Muhammed, who remembers Anubis as the jackal. The prayer only banished Anubis for a few decades.[4]
