DC Database

Aquaman is a 2018 superhero film directed by James Wan from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall. Produced by DC Films, it centers around the title character as he tries to claim the throne of Atlantis from his tyrannical half-brother who plans to unite the underwater kingdoms to destroy the surface world.

While development on an Aquaman film began in 2004, pre-production on the movie did not begin until 2016. It was produced as part of the DC Extended Universe franchise, and was meant to be set up by Justice League (2017), but many of the scenes tying the films together were cut from the theatrical release, and were not seen until the 2021 director's cut.

Despite mixed critical reception, the film managed to gross $1.152 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year, and the highest-grossing DC Comics film adaptation ever made. It was followed by a non-canonical animated miniseries, Aquaman: King of Atlantis (2021), and a proper sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).
