Arthur Norris was a criminal who used a black box which increases heat to rob banks.

Wally Hacker found Arthur Norris in the slums and took him in, spending all of his money to get Arthur into college. Arthur eventually turned to crime, calling himself the Alchemist. The Flash started to get suspicious when "Wishy" Wally Hacker, who was now a peddler, got a large amount of money from a stranger on the street.

The Alchemist used his black box to rob the Keystone City Continental Trust Bank, but after Joan Garrick burnt herself on a wall on the outside of the bank, the Flash interrupted the robbery. The Flash apprehended the Alchemist's men but the Alchemist managed to escape unseen by jumping through a crumbling wall. The Alchemist visited Wally Hacker who, unaware of his criminal career, was proud of Arthur's achievements.

Wally became suspicious of Arthur staying at home all day and working late at night, and decided to follow him. The Alchemist and his gang robbed a toy shop but were once again interrupted by the Flash. The Flash apprehended the Alchemist's men by using the collection of toys against them and chased after the Alchemist. As the Alchemist was going to use the Black Box on the Flash, the pair were interrupted by Wally Hacker. The Alchemist turned a gun on Wally and threatened to shoot, using him as a means to escape. The Flash chased the Alchemist onto the roof and knocked him unconscious.
