August Cartwright was the father of Jonathan Cartwright and a deranged surgeon. Through the lenses of Alice's madness, he became the Caterpillar. After Alice's escape, he disappeared for a while and assumed the identity of Dr. Ethan Campbell. Eventually, he was strangled to death by Kate Kane after admitting that he kept her mother's head in a freezer.
