Bane was a criminal mastermind from Santa Prisca that, after spending years in isolation in the prison Peña Duro, sought to prove himself by defeating the Batman of Gotham.
History
Once he arrived in Gotham, Bane enacted his plan and successfully broke Batman's back, causing the hero to pass the mantle to Jean-Paul Valley, who became a much more violent vigilante.
Having been forced to go into hiding, Bane would later have a son with Lady Shiva, but, years later, would be discovered by the new Batman and stabbed to death with a sword with his young son witnessing his father's death at Valley's hands.
