Dr. Barry Allen was a government scientist working on Project Olympus at Fort Fox.
History
Barry was the point man on an augmented weapons program which Project Olympus was partnered with the private company Lazarus Corp on. The project head, Dr. Elenore Thawne, allowed Barry to expand his research beyond his original brief and as a result nobody, including her, knew exactly what he was working on. His research resulted in multiple people being biologically altered and developing superhuman powers. Among his test subjects were Project Heatwave, Project Firestorm, Project Wizard and an unknown person referred to only as "Project XXXXX". Their powers were too unstable to be useful to Project Olympus and so they were kept in stasis in his lab.[1]
Barry recognised that Wally West, the son of the base commander Colonel Rudy West, was bored and lonely as he had no friends his own age. He looked up Wally's records and discovered that the boy was highly intelligent. Believing that Wally's potential was being wasted, he reached out to him and invited him to work part time with Project Olympus, but Wally's father forbade it immediately. The next day, Barry was working on an experiment when Wally snuck into the lab. Wally was caught in an exotic energy field and seemed to disappear into red lightning. Rudy stormed in and attacked Barry, demanding to know what had happened and telling him he should have stayed away from his son. However, behind them the lightning coalesced into Wally in some kind of energy form. Wally returned to normal in another burst of lightning and Barry ran up and grabbed onto him, telling him to focus on him and stay with them. Wally yelled at Barry to get away and another burst of lightning shot out of him and hit Barry in the chest.[2][3]
Terrified, Wally fled from Fort Fox at superhuman speed. Barry was still caught up in the lightning and Wally dragged him along, the flesh peeling off his bones from the immense speed. Wally eventually came to a stop in the Mojave Desert and Barry, somehow still alive, begged Wally to help him. He died shortly after and Wally hid with his body in a cave. After fighting off and escaping The Rogues, Wally returned to the cave. He buried Barry's body and took the containment suit he was wearing for the experiment as his costume.[4]
