Synopsis for "Batgirl Rising: Point of New Origin, Part Two"

Barbara Gordon yells at Stephanie Brown for endangering her life again as Batgirl after she previously brought Gotham to its knees and nearly died. Steph insists it's none of her business, but Barbara says it is because she wears a bat across her chest, which is asking for attention from more dangerous criminals who want to make their mark. Barbara hits a nerve, and Steph spends the night fighting crime as Batgirl.

In her philosophy class, Steph snipes at Jordanna Spence. Jordanna knocks her over as they are leaving, and her friend Francisco helps Steph pick up her notes and invites her to “blow off some steam” with them later. Oracle, meanwhile, is investigating the murder that set off last night's riot, and she discovers the victim had been drugged with a hallucinogen called “Thrill” that raised his adrenaline and cortisol levels.

Jordanna incoherently confronts Steph at the Harvest Festival before passing out. When Steph asks someone to call 911, a group of men take off running and Steph knows Batgirl is needed. She chases down the men and hears them discuss their boss briefly before the situation turns into a fight, and Oracle uses the technology installed in the suit when it was Cassandra's to communicate with her. Oracle explains what Thrill is, and Batgirl recognizes the effects from the Harvest Festival. Batgirl wants to pursue the drug dealers, but Oracle orders her to stand down because she needs better technology to identify them. She asks Alfred, who is in space with the Outsiders, if he still keeps a key under the mat.

In the Batcave, Oracle analyzes images of the drug dealers while Batgirl admires the costumes on display. Oracle tells her that one of the drug dealers went to the hospital and reported a run-in with “someone pretending to be Batgirl,” and both Barbara and Steph realize Barbara is being cruel on purpose. Steph asks whether this is about her or Barbara, and Barbara hastily leaves, threatening to call Steph's mother if she tries to work the case on her own.

Detective Nick Gage is escorting Steve, the drug dealer, to GCPD Headquarters when they are attacked. Commissioner Gordon finds Gage and another officer unconscious at the scene while Steve tells his boss, Scarecrow, that he knew he'd save him.

  • Barbara tells Stephanie she used photographs from her autopsy to dissuade the last girl who wanted to be Batgirl; that was Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe in Birds of Prey #99.
  • Stephanie claims in this issue that she doesn't know how to sew; however, she previously sewed her original costumes as Spoiler and Robin.[3]
