Synopsis for "Bat Girl Summer, Part 2"

Stephanie Brown believes the coded message found in the false eye is a book cipher, so she and Cassandra go to the Gotham Hill Public Library to find any book that could conceivably have something to do with eyes. At the library Stephanie bumps into Kyle Mizoguchi, who offers to help them. Stephanie is visibly attracted to Kyle and he gives her his phone number. When they leave the library the Batgirls see Killer Moth flying overhead and chase after him, but he manages to hit them with his web gun and leave them to fall into Gotham's fish market.

Meanwhile, Barbara reaches out to GCPD Commissioner Renee Montoya, hoping to establish the same kind of cooperation that Batman had with her father. Despite being a former masked vigilante herself, Montoya refuses to coordinate with Barbara on the Hill Ripper case. Out of respect for her wishes, Babs decides not to hack the GCPD database for the evidence they have gathered.

The next day, Alysia Yeoh visits the Batgirls. While chatting, she reveals that true crime podcaster Grace O'Halloran regularly drinks in her bar and Barbara asks her to pass an anonymous message to Grace. Stephanie and Cass crack the cipher, matching it to "The Telltale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe. They translate the message into a riddle pointing them to the next clue, and Babs realise that they are dealing with the Riddler, who is revealed to be living nearby.

Trivia

  • While speaking to Barbara Gordon, Renee Montoya mentions that the Batgirls are multiplying and jokes about "someone feeding them after midnight". This is a reference to the Mogwai creatures from the movie Gremlins.
    • Later, she also mentions having been one of them which is a nod to her The Question identity.
