Batgirls #18 is an issue of the series Batgirls (Volume 1) with a cover date of July, 2023. It was published on May 16, 2023.
Synopsis for "From Hell's Heart, Part 2"
The Batgirls investigate the abandoned church which the Saints used as a base, as their sniper Assisi evaded capture and may be responsible for the recent shootings. They find nothing but Officer Brooks gives them a note that was sent to the GCPD, warning that the shootings will continue until the Batgirls are arrested and prosecuted. He warns them that Montoya may soon feel pressured to capture them by force if they do not turn themselves in.
Stephanie briefly considers surrendering, but Barbara tells her that whoever is behind the shootings will just find another justification if they do. She suggests they pretend to turn themselves in to see how the shooter will react and Barbara says she will consider it. She sends them to meet an "informant" at Gotham City Dam. This turns out to be Batman who tells them that a villain who targets the people they protect to try and get to them is the worst kind of threat. He advises them to lay low and find a way to fight crime without being seen. They agree and head off, telling him they will make him proud, and he quietly says that they already have.
Barbara goes to Brooks, who is staking out the sniper's original firing position, in disguise and in her wheelchair so he will not suspect she is a Batgirl. She gives him a thumb drive containing her plan to give to Montoya. They notice another bullet hole in a wall and both realise that somebody else was firing at the sniper, meaning there are two shooters. Barbara gets a call from Alysia Yeoh, telling her that the bank she is in is being robbed, and she slips away without Brooks noticing. She alerts Cass and Stephanie, who manage to get into the bank and foil the robbers without being seen.
That evening, Barbara calls and tells them she has a plan. She tells them to turn on the news, where Monotya announces that the Batgirls have turned themselves in to the police, complete with deepfake footage showing the two of them under arrest. Unfortunately, this leads Grace O'Halloran to lead a mass protest through The Hill the next day, demanding their release. Realising the shooter will target the march, Cass and Steph both race to the protest.
