You want to kill Gotham?! For being weak! For being afraid! For failing again and again and again! I am Gotham. Kill me.
- — Batman
I Am Gotham is a five-part Batman storyline with an epilogue written by Tom King and illustrated by David Finch, featuring the introduction of two new super-powered heroes to the city of Gotham, and the fallout resulting from their arrival.
Synopsis
An airliner is falling towards the ground about to crash into Gotham city. Batman, with the help of Duke, tracks the plane through the city and successfully lands it safely on the water using the Batmobile's ejector seat and onboard thrusters. Batman expecting to have died in the rescue attempt is surprised at the successful landing and realizes he was assisted by two new superpowered beings, Gotham and Gotham Girl, who express their desire to protect the city.
Despite their superpowers, he realizes they need guidance and decides to mentor them. Meanwhile, a series of disturbing suicides shake the Gotham Police Department, with individuals rambling about the arrival of "monster men" before violently taking their own lives. The phrase "monster men" and the suicides lead Batman to connect the acts to Hugo Strange and Psycho-Pirate, who seemingly are manipulating the emotions of others.
In the meantime, Gotham and Gotham Girl continue to protect the city, but these manipulated emotions infect Gotham, who becomes overwhelmed turning violent, even killing Amanda Waller's soldiers.
Batman, realizing the danger Gotham started posing, confronts him, but struggles against his superhuman strength. When Batman is unable to stop Gotham, he calls upon the Justice League for assistance, but this proves unsuccessful as Gotham's powers amplify relative to those he fights.
As Gotham's madness spirals further, the true nature of his and his sister's powers is revealed - the powers had been purchased at great cost, and their use shortens their lifespan significantly. With Gotham about to kill Batman, Gotham Girl steps in, using a large portion of her powers to stop her brother, which consequently takes Gotham's life.
Gotham Girl mourns her brother's death, pointing to the grave danger posed by their powers and the toll it takes on their lives.
