Synopsis for "Interlude: I Heard the Monsters Singing"
At Ace Chemicals, the Joker pushed psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel into a vat of purple chemicals, where it altered her mind, turning her revulsion of the Joker into affection. She was washed out of a pipe at a dumping ground, where she began to seek out the Joker.
At the Gotham Sewer Lines, a pair of crooks from the Seventh Street Syndicate brought a trunk as payment to Waylon Jones, the Killer Croc. As the crooks leave, Killer Croc opens the trunk to find it contained toys, which angered Killer Croc. It was then a torrent of purple chemicals was dumped on him from a pipe above, which altered his mind to see the trunk's contents as treasures.
A marketplace in Gotham was secretly a black market, but on that day, it was a crime scene. Batman and Commissioner Gordon were there and saw a group of thugs tied up, yet the contrabands were still present. Batman deduced it was an interrogation. Elsewhere at a warehouse, the Eager Beaver Gang was attacked by a group of people in skull masks who were looking for a specific scimitar. One of the gang members informed them that they do not have the blade as the owner was placed in prison, and they should ask the one who arrested him. Batman while driving the Batmobile, was conversing with Robin if he had seen anything unusual, who informed he did not. It was then the Batmobile was stopped by the same group of skull-masked assailants, who introduced themselves as the Demon's Brood, who wished to hire the Batman for assistance.
Back at the sewer, Killer Croc started seeing the trunk of old toys as treasure. He saw a grey mask as if it was made of gold, and a toy doll began to speak to him as a little girl.
