Synopsis for "The Penguin's Nest"
The Penguin has opened up a new restaurant called "The Penguin's Nest", which caters exclusively to Gotham City's upper class. Among the diners are Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Commissioner Gordon, Chief O'Hara and Aunt Harriet. Bruce takes note of the restaurant's servicing system where orders are written down by the patrons and not the waiters. Penguin takes his time to greet Aunt Harriet…and then steals her diamond bracelet. O'Hara is quick to apprehend him, but before he can be sent off to jail, Bruce suggests calling Batman, as the case may be a lot simpler than one might suspect.
Bruce and Dick return to the restaurant as Batman and Robin where they find Gordon and O'Hara interrogating Penguin, who insists that a force of habit was what led him to stealing the bracelet. Batman is disgusted at how the Penguin could be able to steal after starting a business where the average tab is $87 per person. Even so, Batman requests a brief audience with Penguin's staff, Chef Cordy Blue, Matey Dee the headwaiter and Chickadee the hat-check girl, all of whom have a dark past of criminal activities. Cordy Blue was the chief hash slinger at the state penitentiary, Matey Dee was Warden Crichton's personal valet and Chickadee made a living as a bootlegger and seller of untaxed cigars. ("An unsavory crew," whispers Batman to Robin).
Batman, Robin, Gordon and O'Hara quietly discuss that Penguin has a more ulterior motive in store, since he is that desperate to go to prison and decide to inform him that he had a temporary lapse of insanity. In a fit of rage, Penguin tosses a pie in Gordon's face, but Batman lets him off, stating that he was overwrought with astonishment. All four leave, with Batman recommending a cup of hot cocoa to Penguin to calm his nerves. Nearby the elevator, Batman tells the commissioner that Penguin's headquarters may be somewhere within the building and they plan to scale the place in order to search for it.
Batman's hunch proves to be correct, for Penguin has his lair in the kitchen of the restaurant where he vents his frustration to his crew. Matey Dee cheers him up with a pile of food orders--raw material for criminal millions. His umbrella flashes, detecting the Dynamic Duo. When Robin and Batman arrive, they find Penguin holding Cordy Blue blindfolded and at gunpoint. Penguin fires, Batman and Robin rush in and find that the whole execution was faked. They decide to ship Penguin off to jail.
Later, Batman and Robin have placed Penguin in a cell for petty crooks for violating the health code. This gives the Dynamic Duo more time in the Batcave to uncover Penguin's plot. First, they find out that he shares a cell with Ballpoint Baxter, a master forger and learn from Warden Crichton that prisoners have access to blank check forms from the prison print shop to help them better be able to handle their own finances after they have left the walls of the state penitentiary. With this new information, Batman and Robin have figured out Penguin's plot: He plans to legally collect handwriting samples from his restaurant's patrons, turn them over to Ballpoint Baxter, who will use the blank checks to forge the millionaire's signatures and cash them in, which will undoubtedly make him a very wealthy bird.
Batman and Robin decide to take Penguin to the state penitentiary to nab him in the act, but Penguin has a breakout of his own. When the Dynamic Duo arrive, a fight breaks out, but Chickadee puts a stop to all of that when she holds Chief O'Hara at gunpoint. They kidnap him to a swimming pool and lock him in a trunk. The Dynamic Duo race to the rescue, unaware that Penguin has a trap of his own set for them in a form of a machine gun...
