Batman Chronicles #23 is an issue of the series Batman Chronicles (Volume 1) with a cover date of December, 2000.

Synopsis for "The Bomb, The Bull, The Butler & The Bat"

Alfred Pennyworth sees a strange man near his car, who flees as soon as he's spotted. The car blows up when he puts the groceries inside. Alfred and Bruce agree that Bruce was the more likely target, and he leaves to investigate while Alfred deflects the police from Wayne Manor. He convinces Harvey Bullock to take him to police headquarters for his statement.

He identifies Jiggs Skyler as the man he saw, which Bullock declares impossible because Skyler has been dead for months. Alfred says the man could have been a member of the False Face Society wearing a mask of a dead man's face and joins Bullock in his interrogation of Skyler's widow, who directs them towards Jack's Bar where her husband used to play poker.

They find Matty Boom-Boom unconscious, with the false nose and ears he used to impersonate the dead Skyler, along with his friends. They come to the conclusion that they knocked each other out, not realizing that Batman had solved the case before them, fought Matty Boom-Boom and his friends, and left them for the police to find.

Synopsis for "Automotive"

A thief is hiding among the trash when the Batmobile drives into the alleyway. He initially believes Batman has found him and taunts him to come get him, but then thinks no one is inside the car and it's on autopilot. He talks himself out of it and into shooting the car. When the bullets ricochet off, he panics and takes off running as the Batmobile seems to chase him. He runs past the store he held up and the shopkeeper, who identifies him to the police, straight into Batman and Robin. Robin wonders why he'd run back to the scene of the crime, but Batman sees the Batmobile and smiles.

Synopsis for "The Mimic"

Francesca Benedict hires Jason Bard to find out who is sending her threatening letters. He takes one of the letters to his former professor, who notes the similarity to the letters send by the Mimic centuries ago. He looks into the serial killer who terrorized Gotham before it was Gotham, and he figures out that Francesca must be descended from the Mimic's last victim, Rance Benedict. He goes to Francesca's hotel room but finds her gone, and he realizes the Mimic impersonator must have used his ability to mimic people's voices to lure her out. He goes to Robinson Park, where Rance Benedict was killed, and he sees what appears to be Francesca grappling with the hooded Mimic. He shoots “Francesca,” who is really the Mimic, and frees Francesca from her bounds. The Mimic dies.
