Synopsis for "...Can and Will..."
Following the testimony of the psychiatrist Dr. Mackenzie, the Joker kills her by placing a banana peel in her path. Geoff Shancoe is in the audience and tries to grab a security guard's gun, but he is stopped by his partner Sutton.
Mayor Hill is furious with Jim Gordon and Harvey Dent for ruining his political reputation with their failure to contain the Joker. Batman warns Gordon he needs to rethink their incarceration protocols, but Gordon believes Batman is just as in the dark as the rest of them.
Batman goes undercover as Matches Malone to find out what the Joker wants. He gets arrested for firebombing a Wayne Enterprises storage facility and is placed in the cell next to the Joker. The Joker sees through his disguise. He tells Batman he will continue to kill people for fun until he kills Batman or Batman kills him.
The Joker is deemed unfit to stand trial and sent to Holly Springs.
Gordon goes to the Shancoes' apartment. He tells Geoff he either goes to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting or he steps down from the force. Geoff pulls his gun on Gordon, who now sees Sutton is there and bleeding on the floor, and pulls the trigger.
