Batman #543 is an issue of the series Batman (Volume 1) with a cover date of June, 1997. It was published on April 16, 1997.
Synopsis for "Faceless - Part 2 Postmarked: Murder"
Batman and Robin discuss the "faceless" murders. They realize that there is a new killer in Gotham City and that he probably suffers from an identity crisis. They can't figure out the connection between the murderer and his victims except for the area of the crimes; all developed in West Gotham. Batman decides to patrol that part of the city while Robin stays in the Batcave and search for more clues.
At the West Gotham Florist store, Faceless is ready to kill the florist, who throws an empty vase at Faceless but the killer dodges it. The vase goes through a window and Batman hears the glass breaking from afar as well as the scream of a man. By the time he arrives, it's already late; the florist has been murdered and his face taken. Batman follows the trail of blood left by Faceless and he spots the man walking away. Batman tries to catch up with the man but just around the corner he loses the man due to a massive crowd coming out of a theater. Faceless mixes himself with the crowd and walks away.
Back in the Batcave, Batman tells Robin what happened. Alfred interrupts to give Bruce the flowers that arrived at Wayne Manor sent by Vesper Fairchild. Bruce realizes two facts: the flowers are from the same store where Faceless struck and Vesper lives in West Gotham. Bruce calls her to apologize for forgetting about their first night date and to make sure that she is alright. Bruce tells her to take care and Vesper wonders what keeps Bruce so busy at nights.
When Alfred tells Bruce that the flowers are a special delivery, Bruce notices a connection between the murders and the cryptic messages written with the victims' blood. One of the messages reads "special deathery". Batman tells Robin to pinpoint the places where Faceless has struck and they realize that the places describe a pattern. On his way out, Batman tells Robin to figure out if there was a mail delivery route that matches with the places. When Batman is on his way to West Gotham, Robin calls him and tells him that the only mailman with that route is a man named Joseph Zedno. Robin gives Batman the man's address and Batman goes directly there.
Faceless is lifting a barbell and wondering in a manic way who will be his next victim. Batman enters into the place and he is shocked to see mountains of mail. Faceless confronts Batman while the Dark Knight tries to approach the killer. Faceless throws the barbell he was lifting at Batman who catches it but Faceless launches against Batman who can't stand the combined weight. Faceless is completely deranged and he almost manages to asphyxiate Batman with the barbell. He is distracted when someone calls out his name and Batman seizes the opportunity to attack the killer. Zedno ends in a bad position and Batman punches him so hard in the face that Zedno is immediately knocked down. The one who helped Batman was Robin who arrived just in time to help his boss put an end to the killings of Faceless.
