Synopsis for "Out of the Past"
Bruce Wayne is digging through Wayne Enterprises records to find out what Thomas Wayne knew about the mafia that led to him going to the police and falling out with Lew Moxon. Sasha Bordeaux doesn't understand his process, and while they are speaking, he notices she is wearing a gun and confronts her. She believes his "no guns" rule is childish.
Batman breaks into the home of Junior Galante's lieutenant Angelo Berretti and asks why Zeiss killed Jeremy Samuels to pay back a blood debt against Thomas Wayne. Berretti tells him about the mayor's Halloween party twenty-five years prior, during which Lew Moxon received news that his nephew Bruno had been shot while on a job. With their regular doctors unavailable, Moxon told Berretti to bring Thomas, and to get Thomas to leave with him, Berretti had to promise Martha that Thomas would be safe.
Thomas successfully performed the surgery, but afterwards, he refused Moxon's money and told him he was going to report the incident to the police. When Moxon threatened his family, Thomas punched him. Berretti wouldn't let Moxon kill Thomas because of the promise he had made to Martha, and he pointed out that Thomas was seen leaving the party with him, which would lead the police straight to Moxon if anything happened to him. Berretti took Thomas home, and the next day, Thomas reported the incident to the police. Bruno was arrested and killed in the county jail.
Berretti doesn't think Moxon had anything to do with the Waynes' murders a few months later, and he doesn't know if he will continue his revenge against Thomas. Batman leaves and visits his parents' grave to apologize to his father for doubting him, and he thinks back to the night of the party.
Sasha picks him up. He explains to her that guns might be tools, but they are tools that make it too easy to take a life and he would dishonor his cause if he sunk to the level of people who use them. Sasha continues to think it is an adolescent fixation.
