Several different groups of criminals are inside Louis E. Grieve High School, and numerous teachers and students are trapped inside with them, including Darla Aquista, who was shot since the hostage situation began, and Tim Drake, the former Robin.
Tim has managed to get a number of them to safety in the nurse's office and he is relieved when Batman, Batgirl and Nightwing arrive via the sewers and are able to clear the gunmen out.
Afler learning of Darla Aquista's current state, Batman carries her unconscious body from the school while the media swarm over the image, some claiming that he has killed her, while others claim he and his allies made the situation worse, thus hastening her end.
