Bruce Wayne arranges to have Wayne Manor redecorated while he is participating in a murder trial in Chicago, leaving Robin to operate out of a nearby cabin belonging to a vacationing mystery writer named Freddy Hobbs. He encounters a mysterious woman who asks for his help and gives him an envelope containing thousands of dollars, but the money subsequently disappears, and when he (as Dick Grayson) tells Commissioner Gordon about this and other mysterious occurrences he is laughed out of police headquarters.

Synopsis for "The Machines of Menace!"
A series of robberies committed in Gotham City by fantastic machines prompts Batman and Robin to follow one out to sea, where they are brought down near the island retreat of genius inventor Eric Golar. After their capture, Batman and Robin learn that Golar dreamt of creating a fully automated city, but that dream was dashed when a thug named Nero Thompson took control of Golar's machines and imprisoned him.
