Quote1 All of you are to leave Gotham today. Go on vacation without your masks. Or put your masks on and find other monsters to fight. I don't care what you do. As long as you don't do it here. Bane is stronger than you. He may be stronger than me. Five days. I need five days to save Gotham Girl. And I will save her. But I won't kill you to do it. Quote2

Synopsis for "I Am Bane, Part One"

DAY ONE: A shadowy figure jumps the gate to Arkham Asylum. Inside, Batman stands before Psycho-Pirates cell, and talks to Jeremiah Arkham about Psycho-Pirate. Bronze Tiger, the shadowy figure seen earlier, jumps and kicks Batman into the glass just as the Asylum Guard pulls his gun and tries to fire at Batman. The bullet hit Tiger, accidentally shooting Arkham in the head before Batman and Bronze Tiger take him out. The Guard gives a bloody smile, showing the words "I AM BANE" written on his teeth. Batman punches the Guard, knocking out a number of those teeth. Batman remarks that Arkham fainted before the bullet hit him, saving him. Bronze Tiger explains to Batman that withdrawal from the drug Venom is excruciatingly painful, and that Bane is coming to Gotham in order to find the Psycho-Pirate, the one man who can help ease that pain.

Later, at fast food restaurant Batburger, Bruce Wayne, Duke Thomas, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Damian are ordering their food when the employee at the register asks if Bruce would like his fries Jokerized. Bruce, significantly angered by this casual attitude to the Joker, who he describes as "a psycho-maniac who wants to kill us all so he can laugh over our graves." Duke then tells the employee that Bruce would like the fries normal. At the booth, Damian complains about the children's meal that Dick had ordered for him and jokes that if the toy is a Red Hood action figure he would kill someone. Jason mocks him and tries to take the toy that came with the meal. Bruce says they should have met in the cave, and Dick jokes that they're all tired of Alfred's cucumber sandwiches. Bruce agrees but warns them not to tell Alfred about the remark about his sandwiches. Bruce remarks that if Alfred finds out, "God help us all".

Bruce informs them that Bane is coming to Gotham. He says that it will take five days to reverse what happened to Gotham Girl and that Bane will try anything to get the Pirate back. Duke remarks to Dick about Bruce's curious habit of eating hamburgers with a knife and fork. As Dick explains that Bruce is "Mr. Raised By The Butler." Damian throws food at Jason for taking his toy. Bruce slams his food on the table and yells "Enough!". The Robins then start joking about how they've all been dead before, much to the surprise of Duke, who wonders aloud if he will die. Bruce insists no one is going to die, not after Tim, who apparently died in Detective Comics Vol 1 #970. The Bruce then says that he doesn't want any of their help and insists that they leave Gotham tonight. Bruce leaves, leaving the Robins to decide whether to heed his warning or not. Duke says he intends to leave Gotham, as Bruce insisted. Dick remarks "Smart kid," under his breath. Meanwhile, Damian and Jason have returned to arguing in a typical fraternal manner.

On the roof of GCPD, Batman sees the Bat-Signal and arrives, expecting to see Gordon, but instead finds Catwoman. Batman tells her she needs to leave Gotham, as Bane will be out for revenge against her, but she refuses in a typically flirtatious manner. Gordon then comes onto the roof with a team of police officers and tries to arrest Catwoman as she jumps off of the GCPD rooftop. Gordon admonishes Batman for not assisting. Batman leaves.

At Wayne Manor, Bruce says that he's taking Gotham Girl for her first session tonight. He says he "may" need Alfred's help. Alfred remarks that he must be deaf and that it would be absurd to think that he just heard the extremely self sufficient Bruce ask for help. When they exit the elevator to the Batcave, Gotham Girl begins to scream, and Bruce and Alfred are shocked to see Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood hung by their necks, apparently dead. "I AM BANE" is written in blood on their bodies.
