Beatrice "Bea" Bennett, born Destiny Alston, is the current Captain Blüd[3] and leader of The Hold. She is also the owner of the "Prodigal Bar" in Bludhaven and a former agent of Spyral. She became Ric Grayson's girlfriend after she allowed him to live in her building.
History
Origins
Destiny Alston's mother Nicole worked for a company called Ascendek, often working long hours and spending little time with her. One day when Destiny was nine, Nicole abruptly took her out on a boat, claiming they had to move for her work. The boat they were on blew up, and Destiny only survived because Nicole pushed her overboard at the last second. When she surfaced, Destiny saw a boat speeding away from the wreck and realised that whoever was sailing it had killed her mother. Destiny was rescued and taken to Bludhaven General Hospital. She overheard doctors speaking in the hallway outside and saying that, as she had no living family, she would be placed in foster care. She escaped from the hospital and spent the next four years living on the streets.[2]
When she was thirteen years old the homeless encampment she and her friends lived in was purchased by Ascendek, who planned to turn it into a warehouse. Angry at what the company had done, she stole the CEO's superyacht single-handed and sailed it out to the coordinates where her mother was killed. The yacht was raided by the Crew of the Crossed Keys lead by their captain, Ruben Blüd. Ruben was impressed by Destiny and both recruited and adopted her. Destiny stole the CEO's laptop from the yacht, but found that it was encrypted.[2][4][1]
Five years later, Ruben told Destiny that he had chosen her as his successor over his biological son Dirk Blüd, who was a ruthless criminal, a decision some members of the Hold were not happy with. However, Destiny had finally hacked into the CEO's laptop and learned that her mother had been assassinated by someone called "Revenant". She told Ruben that she couldn't take over the Hold until she had avenged her mother and he gave her his blessing to return to Bludhaven and find her mother's killer.
Spyral
In Bludhaven, Destiny learned that a businessman with Mafia ties named Bianchi acted as a middleman for a lot of assassinations in the city, and broke into his nightclub to interrogate him. She easily got past his security and looked through his contact list for Revenant but one of his guards, a woman named Carmen Navarro told her that her mother's assassination had been arranged by La Agente Funebre, someone many tiers above Bianchi. Carmen revealed that she was a deep cover agent of Spyral and recruited Destiny into the organisation.
Destiny was sent to train at St. Hadrian's Finishing School for Girls in England, where she rapidly advanced and became a Spyral agent in record time. After graduating she was partnered with Lian Shan and became one of Spyral's top field agents using the codename "Siren". One of their missions took them to Russia, where they attempted to retrieve a mask which supposedly contained a communicator which linked directly to La Agented Funebre, as well as a list of all her Russian operatives, which could tell destiny the true identity of "Revenant". Unfortunately Ice Suwannarat, an agent of Checkmate and their major rival, was also there to steal the mask. Destiny and Ice fought over the mask, and during the fight Ice told her that her mother had been an agent of Checkmate. The oligarch's guards forced them off the roof of the building and Destiny saved Ice from falling to her death. Ice told Destiny that she owed her a debt, but still punched her out and made off with the mask.
When they returned home, Destiny asked Carmen if her mother had been Checkmate and Carmen admitted that she had, but the details were classified. She then immediately gave Destiny a new mission: to get close to and monitor former Spyral agent Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing, who was suffering from amnesia. Destiny refused until Carmen told her than the man who shot Dick and caused his amnesia was KGBeast, who Spyral had recently learned was Revenant.
Ric Grayson
Destiny was furnished with the cover identity of "Bea Bennett" and sent to Bludhaven to join up with Grayson. She made contact with him while he was fighting in an underground bare knuckle boxing league and invited him to come to the Proigal Bar, which Spyral had set up for her. The Prodigal Bar quickly became "Ric Grayson's" base, and the two became friends.[2] Ric was given a mysterious envelope by someone who claimed to have known him as a child. He refused to open it as it was intended for Dick Grayson, his pre-amnesia self. He asked Bea if she knew anywhere where it would be safe until if and when he regained his memories. Bea put him in touch with The Hold, who promised to hold it for him under the name "Nightwing".[3]
As time went on Ric's memory started coming back and he began operating as a vigilante again alongside the Nightwings. Bea found herself falling in love with Ric despite herself and stopped reporting back to Spyral. After weeks of silence, Carmen tracked her down and warned her that if she maintained silence then Spural may either pull her out or assassinate Grayson. However, a few days later as Bea was working up the courage to tell Ric the truth, the Leviathan Organization launched worldwide co-ordinated attacks on the world's intelligence agencies and Spyral went dark. She decided to take the opportunity to abandon her old life and just become Bea Bennett.
When Ric was attacked by Talon, Bea called in Lian, now a superhero known as "Condor Red" to help him. They met privately after Talon was defeated and Lian told her that he had learned Ascendek had been a Checkmate front, meaning that Checkmate had killed one of their own agents when they assassinated her mother. Bea was confused, but Lian revealed that he had also learned Nicole had been a double agent working for Spyral, which no-one in the organisation had told her. He asked her what she would do with the information and she admitted that she didn't know, as she was happy with the life she had with Ric and didn't want to return to being a spy.
Revenant
However, Dick fully regained his memories and left Bea to protect her, unaware of who she really was. Just as he was breaking up with her, KGBeast burst into the bar and attacked Dick. Bea grabbed a gun to kill him but by the time she retrieved it Dick had defeated him and handed him over to the police. Dick disappeared and, since her new life was gone, Bea decided to return to her old goal and kill KGBeast. She broke into Budgaven Private Prison where KGBeast was being held and demanded to know who had hired him to kill her mother. KGBeast admitted killing her mother but said he was not Revenant; Revenant was the one who had hired him, and that they were inside Spyral. Bea was unable to bring herself to kill KGBeast due to the influence Dick had had on her.
She returned home and activated her old Spyral communicator, hoping to make contact with any surviving Spyral agents, but received no response for months. While she was watching Dick announce the Alfred Pennyworth Foundation from an alley, Ice appeared behind her and told her that she had been monitoring La Agente Funebre's communications and that someone had taken out a hit on Dick and Revenant had taken the job. Ice revealed that Revenant was planning to kill Dick then and there, but also kill Bea as she was the true target. Suddenly Ice was shot by a sniper from a nearby building and Bea ran towards the shooter.
Bea fought Revenant and pulled her mask off revealing that she was Carmen. Carmen admitted that she had been working undercover for La Agente Funebre within Spyral for years, and Nicole had learned this while undercover at Checkmate. Carmen had informed La Agente Funebre but also let Nicole know about the hit ahead of time so she would have a chance to escape. When she had learned Bea had survived, she had recruited her as a form of redemption for killing her mother. Carmen was about to shoot Bea when Ice arrived and distracted her, allowing Bea to punch her out.
Captain Blüd
Bea reunited with Ruben and asked him to imprison Carmen. She accepted her role as Ruben's heir and became the new Captain Blüd. She also decided to keep using the name Bea Bennett. Unbeknownst to her, Nicole was still alive and watching them in secret.[2] Bea worked hard to make the Crew of the Crossed Keys into a force for good in Bludhaven.
Two years later, Heartless and Tony Zucco attempted to rob the Hold and murdered Ruben, who was now the Quartermaster of the Hold, in the process, but found that it had disappeared. Bea sent three men disguised as paramedics to retrieve Ruben's body, and Nightwing followed the ambulance to the harbour where Bea and her crew were waiting.[3]
Bea knew that Nightwing was Dick Grayson and recruited him to help her capture Dirk and hand him over to the authorities, as she knew there were elements in the Hold who would prefer to make him captain. She told Dick that she would give him his mystery parcel once Dirk was behind bars. She also made him hand over his mask, that contained a communication link to Oracle.[4]
Bea took Dick to the Crew of the Crossed Keys' hidden island, but when they went to enter her home, known as the Crow's Nest, the found Dirk and his men waiting for them. Bea and Nightwing fought Dirk's henchmen, and when he seemed to flee into the house she chased after him. However, this was in fact a trap; Dirk ran Bea through with his sword and pushed her off a cliff.[5]
Nightwing dove down into the water below and saved her. He took her to an isolated shack on the island and was able to sew up her wound as Dirk missed all her vital organs and blood vessels. He told her that Dirk had declared himself Captain, taken her ship and imprisoned the crew. She realised Dirk was going after the Hold and she needed to beat him to it. She released Dick from his debt, promising to return his box when she had reached the Hold, but Dick said he wasn't going to walk away from her again. She flew them to the Hold's secret location and on the journey told Dick that she understood why some in the Crew would prefer Ruben as Captain because he was Ruben's son; but he replied that she was Ruben's real daughter. As they landed, she noticed that he was still feeling his mysterious bursts of fear.
The reached the old whaling ship and met Amanda, the new Quartermaster. Amanda and the guards, who had been told she was dead, acknowledged her as their Captain. When Dirk arrived in her fishing ship, Dick fought him and his henchmen as a distraction while she snuck on and went below decks to free her crew. They burst up on deck and ordered Dirk to surrender. His henchmen did immediately, but Dirk would only stand down when Bea held her sword to his throat. She punched Dirk out and handed him over to the Norwegian authorities, as that was the country where he was facing the most jail time.
Bea gave Dick the contents of his box, which turned out to be a disc. They played it and it was revealed to be the missing security footage from the night his parents died, proving that Tony Zucco sabotaged their trapeze and killed them. He said he needed to get back to Bludhaven and bring Zucco to justice, and Bea told him that her people would be searching for Zucco and Heartless too.[1]
Large shipments of illegal guns started heading for Bludhaven, but the crew stopped and intercepted them. They also fished a body out of the water with a brand on his chest in the shape of a human heart. Bea reported this to Dick and warned him that Heartless appeared to be planning something big.[6] She later smuggled Dick out of Bludhaven into Europe when Hartless framed Dick for his crimes.[7]
