- He really is big as a bear--swift as an eagle. Worse, he makes no sound at all, save for the whistle of his blade and the shearing of flesh. Trying to fight this human whirlwind is not courage. It is suicide.

Beowulf is the latest in a bloodline of super-soldiers created by the Basilisk to rule the aftermath of the coming war between humans and metahumans that would end the world.
History
For centuries, Beowulf spent most of his life slumbering in a fortress built by the Basilisk in Geatland with orders to guard that base, awaiting a mission to set him to purpose. That call to action came from a lad named Wiglaf, who traveled among King Hrothgar's housecarls in search of the legendary soldier. Waking up to the alert signal of the intrusion of King Hrothgar's men, Beowulf killed almost everyone, sparing only Wiglaf, who would become his first and only friend. The warrior named after the legend's homonymous hero was tasked with slaying the monster Grendel, who feasted upon the people of the Danelaw, and once also devoured Wiglaf's father.
