Billy Batson was granted the ability to transform into Captain Marvel by the wizard Shazam.
History
Billy is a young radio operator, who had joined the Malcolm Expedition in Siam. In an ancient temple, Billy came across the wizard Shazam, who gave Billy the ability to turn into "Captain Marvel", protector of the Golden Scorpion, when danger arises.
Captain Marvel had to protect the innocent, before defeating the Scorpion and destroying the Golden Scorpion. With it destroyed, Captain Marvel was no longer needed and Billy lost his powers and was returned to normal.

- This version of the character is exclusive to the continuity of the movie serial Adventures of Captain Marvel an adaptation of Billy Batson/Captain Marvel. The original character was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck and first appeared in Whiz Comics #2.
- Captain Marvel was portrayed by Tom Tyler, while Frank Coghlan, Jr. portrayed Billy Batson.
- Because this version of Captain Marvel is a unique creation for the serial, his power of invulnerability is modified from the comics to allow him to face risks that a truly invulnerable person would not have to worry about. He clearly cannot be harmed by bullets, knives, swords, and other bladed weapons. However, an intense electric shock is shown to cause him pain and stun him into unconscious for a few minutes. Also there is a point where he is caught in a death trap involving lava. While he escapes the trap before the lava overtakes him, the fearful look on his face leaves the audience with the impression that he could have been harmed by the lava.
