Captain Marvel was a hero from San Francisco, a short-lived version of the character after Crisis on Infinite Earths before a new version was introduced.
History
Main article: Shazam!: The New Beginning Vol 1
The only child of Donald and Marilyn Batson, the Californian Billy Batson was orphaned when the couple was killed in a car sabotaged by Marilyn's stepbrother, Dr. Sivana, who took custody of the boy (this was just a plan to steal his insurance money).
Later, after discovering the machinations of his evil uncle, Billy fled and followed a strange figure through a locked subway station. There, he was chosen by the wizard Shazam to be a champion of good. Shazam gifted Billy with the power of six legendary figures, and when he spoke the Wizard's name, he became Captain Marvel, an adult superhero empowered by these figures.
Captain Marvel joined the other heroes against Darkseid and G. Gordon Godfrey.[3] Captain Marvel became briefly a JLA member, but left the team after a few adventures.

Notes
- Captain Marvel was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck, first appearing in Whiz Comics #2. However, the Earth-85 version of Captain Marvel first appeared in Shazam!: The New Beginning #1 by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, and Tom Mandrake.
- Immediately after his introduction in Legends, the miniseries Shazam!: The New Beginning was published, written by Roy Thomas. The New Beginning served as a prequel to the events of Legends, as it ends with Billy Batson interviewing G. Gordon Godfrey, as he did in Legends #1. A subsequent follow-up series was published in Action Comics Weekly #623-626. However, the majority of the events from these series were replaced when Jerry Ordway's The Power of Shazam! reintroduced the character. The "New Beginning" era was later explicitly ruled non-canon in Crisis on Infinite Earths: Absolute Edition. Some of these stories of the Earth-85 Captain Marvel are confused with the beginnings of the Post-Zero Hour Captain Marvel.
