• This version of the character is exclusive to the continuity of the television series Super Friends and its tie-in comic book series: Super Friends (Volume 1), Super Powers (Volume 1), Super Powers (Volume 2) and Super Powers (Volume 3). It is an adaptation of Black Manta. The original character was created by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy and first appeared in Aquaman #35.
• Black Manta was voiced by Ted Cassidy for most episodes with Stanley Ralph Ross covering the role for one episode.
• In his first appearance Black Manta is called Manta and wore a mud brown costume. In all other appearances he wears his traditional costume and uses the alias Black Manta.
