Blood Syndicate (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 1995.
Synopsis for "Expectations"
The recovering cocooned form of Kwai emits an intense light that attracts the other nine current members of the Blood Syndicate, including Dogg. The exposition to the light is pleasant and reverts all those who are or once were human back to human form - even Brickhouse and Aquamaria.
We meet Kwai's cat familiar Pearl for the first time, as it too is attracted to the bright healing light coming from Kwai's cocoon and reinstroduces itself to Kwai.
Mother's S.Y.S.T.E.M. technician reveals to her and to Sargeant Rose that, of the seven captive subjects that they are captured and subject to treatment, four are very likely to survive the experiments (presumably Bubbasaurus, Oro, Karess and Babe) while there are certain doubts about Masquerade and particularly Templo. Mistress Mercy is also in considerable danger from the treatments, due to a low t-cell count. That statement troubles Rose considerably, leading him to take some time off the operation despite Mother's attempt to reassure him.
We also learn that Rose suffers from terminal cancer in the last stages of its course, and that Mother knows of that despite Rose's attempts at hiding it.
Pearl reveals or reminds Kwai that she had been brought back to life from death dozens of times, but that gift is now depleted. For good or worse, she is now in her last life.
Aquamaria and particularly Brickhouse are disappointed in learning that they have not regained their fully human forms, despite reassurances from Third Rail and Dogg.
Wise Son becomes suspicious of Boogieman, presumably because he now realizes that he never saw his human form before or even knew whether Boogieman can switch between forms at will. Boogieman admits that he can and submits to Wise Man's demand to, revealing to his teammates that he is caucasian, contrary to previously unvoiced expectations. Wise Son seems to be so disappointed that he actually expells Boogieman from the Blood Syndicate, to considerable distress of the others. Several other team members threaten to quit in protest, but Wise Son quickly reverts his decision and asks Fade to bring Boogieman back. He then explains that this was a brief ruse to teach loyalty to Boogieman, but the matter does not seem to be well settled.
Wise Son then calls Kwai and asks her to decide on the fate of the boy who shot her[1] Kwai settles for freeing him and threatening severe punishment if the boy ever hurts anyone again.
Elsewhere, Agent Rose seems to have decided to turn against S.Y.S.T.E.M. for the wellbeing of the still captive Mistress Mercy.
