Synopsis for "Run the Gears, Part I of II"
Travis is taken to the Wilson D Williams Memorial Infirmary at Red Clay in order to treat the injuries he sustained from taking on "King" Salvador. The doctors eventually clear Travis as fit to return to administrative segregation. Meanwhile, Saffron does her yoga instruction at home while talking to her sister Kelly. Kelly asks Saffron if she found Travis appealing or if she had slept with him. Saffron laughed off Kelly's assumptions however, Saffron does admit that she feels a bit enamored by Travis' physique and selfless character. Kelly brings up that Saffron's ex boyfriend Paul was artistic but a cheater. Saffron's call with her sister is interrupted by Jerry Bryce who informs her that Travis is being put into general population rather than Ad-Seg.
The correction officers lead Travis to Tier A and introduce him to his new cellmate Burch. Burch comes off as a hospitable cell mate to Travis but can't seem to stay quiet. Burch asks Travis about his two year stay in solitary after assaulting a few inmates then 9 o clock rolls around for the mandatory head count. Travis notices a familiar face by the name of Feygen and tries to strike up a conversation but Feygen ignores him. Travis continues to prod by asking Feygen why he is seeing so many new faces on the staff. Feygen tells Travis that after the riot in the TV Room, the county appointed a new warden who in turn brought in a new staff after laying off half of the original guards. Feygen answers to his new captain Neil Mangrum. Feygen tells Travis to head to the yard for his work assignment in the tool shed.
Travis reaches the tool shed to get himself situated until he is attacked by a convict named Luke Hickey. Hickey takes a few swings at Travis with a shovel until Travis disarms him. Travis interrogates Hickey by slowly breaking his nose. Hickey confesses that if he takes down Travis then he will be the most feared inmate in prison and his gang will be respected. Travis' interrogation is interrupted by the arrival of Captain Mangrum and two other officers. Travis lets Hickey go and Mangrum orders Travis to clean up the mess he made in the tool shed.
Saffron arrives at Red Clay and confronts Warden Jonah Bramlett about his decision to put Travis into general population. Bramlett's explanation is that Travis can defend himself in general population plus he has already given up Travis' cell in Ad-Seg to a recently admitted prisoner. Saffron threatens Bramlett that the bureau's authority will overturn his decision. Bramlett laughs off Saffron's threat and tells her take up her complaint with the Department of Corrections. Meanwhile, Travis is mopping up the prison library until he hears a prisoner mumbling to himself down the hallway. As far as Travis could tell, the prisoner was reliving some traumatic event in his life that involved someone named Jimmy and a knife. Travis tries to help the prisoner but the prisoner runs away crying and pleading for his dad to forgive him.
Travis' curiosity is aroused even more when he finds Hickey bleeding from the left side of his rib cage. Hickey sees Travis and asks why Burch would be after him. Hickey says that Burch had attacked him while screaming out Travis' name as if he thought Hickey was Travis. Hickey had no other choice but to grab the knife from Burch and shank him. Travis takes a closer look in the broom closet and finds Burch lying on the floor dead with a knife in his chest.
