Blue Beetle (Volume 6) with a cover date of June, 1986.
Synopsis for "Out from the Ashes"
In Chicago, the fire department attempted to put out a fire and deduced that the cause was arson. Then, on his first day out of retirement, Blue Beetle appeared above them and came out of his Bug. He spotted a man within the fire and offered him help, only to be attacked and learn that his name was Firefist. Blue Beetle and Firefist fought before the latter left the former to burn, so he used the Bug's assistance in saving a trapped fireman.
Afterwards, Blue Beetle told the chief that the man who started the fire was named Firefist and that he escaped. Much to the chief's annoyance, Blue Beetle left on the Bug and returned to his underground fortress. Then, he turned to his Bug and recalled how his Uncle Jarvis' "death" and the death of his old archaeology professor, Dr. Dan Garrett, the original Blue Beetle, both led to that moment. He became Ted Kord and greeted his receptionist Angela Revere, who told him that Murray at S.T.A.R. needed his help. Ted visited Jeremiah Duncan and Melody Case and kissed the redhead before asking them to run an analysis on a piece of charred wood from his fight with Firefist while he went to S.T.A.R. Labs. On Pago Island, Conrad Carapax searched for something that he believed would have been worth Dan Garrett's life. A suit of armor stood underground, beneath Carapax.
Ted Kord visited his former college roommate Murray Takamoto at S.T.A.R. Labs and was briefed on their attempts to alloy their promethium with a titanium-vanadium blend to create a new kind of armor-plating. Ted agreed to help in exchange for money and Murray agreed to send the promethium to his lab the next morning while a janitor thought that he could not let that happen as it would interfere with his plans. At the Chicago Metropolitan Police Headquarters, Lt. Max Fisher came upon Dan Garrett's file and believed that he was the murderer and that the archaeologist's death was not an accident.
Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Ted was summoned by the Bug and suited up as the Blue Beetle to confront Firefist at Engine Company No. 41. Blue Beetle sprayed Firefist with extinguisher, blinding him, although the building still burned. As the two fought on the ground, Firefist trapped Blue Beetle under rubble.
