Bokos was an independent island on the planet Krypton (Pre-Crisis), where crime was legalized and stealing the way of life.
History
The first land sited after the Kryptonian explorer Val-El and his fleet crossed the Dandahu Ocean was Bokos Island. Val had raised funds and built ships to search for new lands, taking his troublesome brother Tro-El in the hope of straightening him out.[1]
Still troublesome, Tro-El staged an unsuccessful mutiny when they first sited land associated with the new continent of Lurvan. As punishment, the surviving mutineers were put ashore on the uninhabited island of Bokos. It was this untrustworthy rabble that created the civilization of the Island of Thieves,[1] and their descendants that populated the Isle.
The Bokosian leaders created a constitution that outlawed honesty and legalized what would be deemed crimes elsewhere. Their criminal tendencies saw them remain independent of the Kryptonian Federation, yet rely on the constant theft of materials and information from them.
Spies such as Bar-Nes were sent out into surrounding lands to "case" the Kryptonian Federation for items worth stealing. Bar-Nes spotted a strange form of Sun-Stone in Erkol, that lit up at night, using only solar power. He contacted his Bokosian ally Ta-Tem to steal the stone, with the hope of selling it to Kryptonopolis or Kandor.[2]
In a twist of fate, when the Isle of Bokos was blessed with a rare archeological find, Jor-El was actually following Bokosian law when he sent Superman and Batman to steal the artifact - which was the mummified body of an ancient miraculous being named Calox, who could still be revived by Jor-El.[3]
Batman and Superman saw crimes being committed everywhere when they were dropped off in Bokos, and they had to follow suit in order to commit their robbery.
Offences in Bokos included:
- Refusing to help a thief escape.[3]
- Putting money into a parking meter.[3]
- Those who were different or overly cruel were banished, such as Az-Rel and Nadira.[4]
