The Fighting Yank was a member of SMASH.

Bruce Carter I was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Given a special mission by General Washington, Carter was killed by British spies, and the information he was carrying fell into enemy hands. His spirit was confined to earth for his failure.

Bruce Carter III was the spitting image of his great-grandfather. He was visited by the ghost of Bruce Carter, who showed him the location of a magical cloak and tri-corner hat that could give the wearer invulnerability and super strength. Only Carter's girlfriend, Joan Farwell, knows of his dual identity. She figured it out during their first encounter (as she pointed out, she knew him too well to be fooled by a domino mask).

Bruce became a member of SMASH and later fathered a daughter named Carol, who gained the same powers as her father and fought alongside him. In 1969, Bruce and Carol, and along with many other heroes were placed into suspended animation after an alien invasion from the Moon in 1969. Thirty years later, he, Carol, and the others were freed by Tom Strong and Tom Strange, and continued their battle against the same extraterrestrials. However, Bruce was killed while trying to protect his daughter. Carter's spirit remained on Earth, operating as Carol Carter's equivalent of his own "colonial ancestor" - advisor and source of powers through his old cloak and hat.
