The Batman (real name Bruce Wayne) is a vigilante who works as a blue-collar civil engineer in his civilian identity. Using an arsenal of personally-crafted weaponry and vehicles, combat expertise, and genius intellect, he works to protect Gotham City from crime.
History
Origin
Darkseid created the Absolute Universe to be a world where heroes were the underdogs, and lacked the advantages of their Earth 0 counterparts.[2] As such, Bruce grew up in a working-class family in the impoverished neighborhood Crime Alley, unlike his counterpart, who had been born into wealth. He was born in 2004 in Gotham City to social worker Martha Wayne and elementary school teacher Thomas Wayne. As a child, he attended his father's school and formed lifelong friendships with children who would have been his enemies in another life: Waylon, Ozzie, Harvey, Eddie, and Selina.[3] Their friends believed that Bruce and Selina had a crush on each other and teased them for it, but they both denied it.[4]
Around 2014 Bruce entered the state-wide "Young Engineers Competition", which was held at Gotham Zoo. The task was to design a collapsible bridge for use in a disaster area themed around an animal, and Bruce chose to base his design on bats. Inspired by bats' intimidating appearance Bruce's initial design was strong and imposing with high guardrails shaped like a bat's wing, so that people inside would feel protected. When he showed it to Thomas, his father did not seem to like it and asked Bruce if he something intended for use by people in need should be intimidating. Bruce came up with an improved design which contained multiple adjustable parts and was much more versatile, inspired by how bats were adaptable. Thomas like the new design much better, but asked Bruce if he believed he had really captured what made a bat special at its core. He also told Bruce that it had taken him a long time to work out who he really was and what he wanted, revealing that he had wanted to be a doctor before Bruce was born.
Inspired by what Thomas had told him, Bruce realized that he had been approaching it wrong and should have been thinking about what the people who used the bridge needed, not what the bridge needed to be. He came up with a new design that combined the best elements of the two previous ones and was also lightweight enough to be airdropped into devastated areas, so that people could deploy it themselves and for their own needs without needing to rely on the powers that be. Bruce won the competition with his final design, winning a field trip for his fifth grade class to Gotham Zoo. The morning of the class' visit was the happiest of Bruce's life, especially when he saw how proud of him Thomas was.[5] However, the zoo was attacked by a mass shooter. Thomas, who was chaperoning the trip, ushered all the children into the bat enclosure and tackled the gunman, saving the children at the cost of his own life.[3]
Bruce was left trapped in the bat house with his father's dead body blocking the door. He was swarmed by the bats and covered by the creatures until Jim Gordon came in and found him. That night when he was taken home, he shut himself away in his room and refused to see his mother or friends. He angrily threw his first place medal from the competition out of the window, blaming it for Thomas' death. Selina climbed in through his window with the medal and told him to come with her.[1] She lead him across the rooftops of the city and taught him to walk on a tightrope, telling him to be like a cat and only look at what was right in front of him, not what could happen if he fell.
Selina took Bruce to a roof where stray cats congregated, and she went whenever she was having problems. She told him that she had run away from her latest foster home and Bruce said she could stay with him and his mother but she refused and told him to never ask her again. They jumped down to street level in an alley and Selina told him to sneak in through a door. When he went in, Bruce realized they were in a movie theatre, and an old "Zorro" movie which his dad had wanted to go and see that very night started playing. Bruce almost ran out but Selina stopped him. She told him that he had talents that other kids didn't and he could use what had happened to him to mean something, but only if he ignored his fears and pushed forwards. Their friends, who were waiting for them, jumped out and the group watched the movie together.[6]
The shooter, whose name was Joe Chill, was arrested and found guilty for Thomas' murder. Bruce gave a statement at his sentencing hearing, saying that he would never be happy like he had been on the morning of the field trip again, and screamed at Chill that he hated him. He then left before Chill gave his own statement, saying he didn't care why Chill had done what he did. Chill was imprisoned in Blackgate Penitentiary.[5]
At Thomas' funeral, Gordon told Bruce that his father had been one of the few truly brave people he had ever seen. Gordon also said that the city was planning to pull down the zoo and build something practical on the site so he would never have to see it again. Bruce told Gordon that he didn't want that, instead he wanted something that would make everyone look and remember. The adults listened and, although they shut down the zoo and returned the animals to their native habitats, left the abandoned park to stand as a monument. A huge spotlight called the "Memorial Light" was built on the site and was lit to illuminate the night sky every year on the anniversary of the shooting.[7]
Shortly after his father's funeral, Bruce had a nightmare that Chill broke into his home and killed Martha. He woke up and went looking for her, and found her going through old photo albums. She showed him a picture of him and his friends which Thomas had taken, and said that it was her favorite. Bruce told her that Thomas had taken it on the morning of the shooting, and Martha replied that she knew and that was why it was her favorite. Bruce didn't understand and she explained that it reminds her how his father was always hopeful even in the worst times. She offered to take the photo out of the album if it bothered him, but he asked her to leave it in. She told him she was proud of him for not letting his grief consume him and turn against the world, and said that the only way they could stop bad thing happening was to use their pain to fuel them.[4]
Bruce began preparing for a mission to strike back against the violence and injustice of his city. He studied with Eddie, a genius; and trained with Waylon, who wanted to become a professional fighter. To get an understanding of the criminal underworld he dropped out of school and became a juvenile delinquent with Ozzie. When he had learned everything he needed to he returned to school, where he excelled academically and earned a football scholarship to the best university in the state. He then faked an injury to get out of playing and devoted himself to studying every subject he would need in his mission. After graduation, he returned to Gotham and started working as a utilities engineer to become familiar with the hidden tunnels and ducts of the city, then interned at City Hall with Harvey to understand the politics that drove the city.[3][8]
Operating out of a garage, he armed himself with a gun and fashioned a suit and mask to disguise himself when he went out as a vigilante. He modeled the suit after a bat and designed it to be as frightening as possible, complete with fangs and claws, making him resemble a vampire. In his first mission he took on a Crime Alley street gang called the Ten Thieves who were shaking down residents for protection money. He attacked the Thieves on a rooftop when they were threatening people who refused to pay them. To try and terrify the Thieves he hissed and screeched like a bat, slashed them with his claws and even bit one. He overpowered the Thieves and pulled out his gun to execute their leader, but remembered his discussion with his father about the first bridge design and realized his current theatrical approach was all wrong. The Thieves rallied and he swung away.
Bruce returned to the garage and destroyed his costume and gun. He started work on a more subdued suit and also realized that eliminating street-level criminals like the Ten Thieves wouldn't achieve anything as another group would simply take their place. He instead decided to shut down the Orange Blossom Special, a pipeline of illegal guns and drugs into Gotham from Florida run by the Maronis and Falcones. He stopped one of the shipments inside produce trucks owned by crooked businessman Randal Powers and beat up the criminals transporting them. This felt like a better approach but he realized that the Maronis and Falcones were too big and enmeshed in the city's elite to take down piecemeal.
Bruce left Gotham again on a soul-searching journey to try and work out what the core of Batman was, and decided that the only way to solve the city's problems would be to take the fight directly to the rich and powerful. When he returned he forced himself to visit Chill in prison and listen to what he had to say.[5]
Bruce finally took a job as a civil engineer, using the abandoned upper floors of the skyscrapers he helped build as a base and developed several weapons and gadgets to use to fight crime, including a bat-themed battle axe and throwing knives, and became known as "The Batman".[3] Bruce also planted listening devices and booby-traps in the buildings he worked on,[5] established dozens of underground "caves" around Gotham and was even able to conceal at least one giant armored Batmobile in a hidden chamber at the bottom of an office building.[1]
The Party Animals
Around 2028,[9] Gotham was terrorized by a gang of wealthy, thrill-seeking nihilists known as the Party Animals. Their horrific crimes traumatized the people of Gotham and raised the murder rate seven-hundred percent. Although Bruce affected not to care, he hunted them as Batman. He somehow learned that an elite intelligence operative named Alfred Pennyworth had come to investigate the Party Animals and to engage and kill Bruce if he got in the way of this assignment. He trailed Alfred to his base in the city and stole his motorcycle.
When the Party Animals attacked a town meeting held by Jim Gordon, who was now the mayor of Gotham, Bruce was ready for them. They were able to shoot Gordon, but he dragged them out of City Hall before they could hurt anyone else. Despite being significantly outnumbered and outgunned he was able to fight them off due to his mastery of multiple martial arts. Eventually their leader called him out and attacked him with a cleaver, but Bruce sliced his hand off with an axe. Terrified, the Party Animals fled, directly into an explosive trap Bruce had laid. Alfred came down and ordered him to surrender, leveling a shotgun directly at his head, but Bruce easily disarmed him and escaped.
The next night, Alfred trailed Bruce to his headquarters in the empty top floor of a skyscraper and told him he was shutting him down. Bruce pulled out Alfred's shotgun and Alfred confidently predicted that Bruce was not going to shoot him, but Bruce shot him right in the face. This did not kill him, however, as Bruce had modified the gun to be non-lethal. Bruce drove off the top of the building on Alfred's motorcycle, revealing that he had known Alfred was following him since he came to Gotham. He glided away to safety on the wings of his cape.[3]
Batman waged a continuous one-man war on the Party Animals for the next three weeks. Eventually they found and stormed his high-rise headquarters, but Bruce had anticipated this and rigged the top floors of the building with explosives. When the Party Animals attacked the building, he blew up the top floors while they were climbing the stairs. Nobody was killed, but the building was blasted into the shape of his cowl, with gouts of flame for eyes.
Bruce was able to take one of the Party Animals' helmets from the scene of one of their fights. He examined it and found that it was wired throughout with advanced electronics, including a Global Information System which gave the wearer directions on where the next attack was planned. Bruce attempted to hack it but was unable to; however, he believed that his childhood friend Eddie, a genius with electronics, may be able decode the information. He went to his friend's regular poker game for the first time in months and showed them the helmet, claiming he had found it while working on the cleanup from the City Hall attack. As Bruce expected, Eddie recognized the GIS and eagerly snatched the helmet, excited for a chance to work on such advanced tech. While playing, Bruce also subtly probed his friends for information which would help him figure out the Party Animal's motives. He asked Ozzie, a small-time hustler, if the Party Animals were muscling in on any gang's territory, but Ozzie replied they were just destroying the city and word on the street was that they murdered any crime lord who tried to talk to them. Bruce then asked Harvey, a prosecutor at the D.A.'s office, if he thought the attacks could be linked to the upcoming mayoral election. Harvey said that was unlikely, as Gordon was predicted to lose the election long before the Party Animals came to town; but he had also heard that Gordon's opponent Hamilton Hill had recently come into a huge amount of campaign funds which he called the "golden chest".
Later, Bruce broke into Hill's campaign office, which was in the same building where he kept the Batmobile. He accessed Hill's computer and found a folder named "ArkM", which Bruce thought may have what he was looking for as an Ark was a golden chest. However, when he opened the file the Party Animals leader Roman Sionis appeared on a nearby bank of TV's and told Bruce he had walked into a trap and both the Party Animals and GCPD were about to breach the building. Roman also told Bruce that, if he was able to get out alive, he would give him anything he wanted to go away. A group of Party Animals burst in, but Bruce fought his way past them and jumped down an elevator shaft to the Batmobile.
He climbed into the vehicle's cockpit through a roof hatch and found Alfred waiting for him inside. Alfred asked Bruce to hear him out, telling him that the Party Animals were more than they appeared and they could help each other. Bruce begrudgingly agreed and Alfred said they first needed to get out of there. Due to the vehicle's size, Alfred believed that cockpit was just a hidden room and asked Bruce if he had a car nearby. Bruce replied "You're standing in it" and fired up the Batmobile, driving it through the wall of the building.[1]
They thundered down the streets, pursued by the police and Party Animals. Bruce told Alfred that his thirty seconds started now and to take the rear gun turret. While shooting out the Party Animals' tires, Alfred told Bruce him that he believed Roman Sionis, the leader of the Party Animals; was also Black Mask, a notorious underground mercenary figure. If that was true then Sionis had unlimited resources and couldn't be stopped. Bruce said he would just build bigger but Alfred told him he couldn't build big enough for what he was facing. However, if Sionis had offered Bruce a deal then he was probably almost done in Gotham and just wanted a free hand to operate for a little longer. Alfred advised Batman to save lives by diplomacy and make a deal to stand down, saying that in return Sionis would probably reduce his attacks and give Bruce enough money to make a real difference in Gotham. Bruce refused to just let Sionis get away but Alfred promised that his agency would track the transaction and eventually be able to arrest Sionis. They reached the docks and were cornered by the GCPD. Alfred told Batman that they made a good team and should keep it going. He asked if Bruce had something to get them out of there and Batman told him to pull a lever in the gun nest, which actually triggered an eject. Alfred pulled the level and it rocketed him into the air. Batman sealed off the Batmobile and drove it into the bay and through an underwater tunnel to a nearby Batcave.
Later, Bruce went to see Eddie and asked what he had learned from the helmet. Eddie told Bruce that the helmet network not only provides targets for the wearer but also valuations: for every crime committed, the wearer was rewarded with a certain amount of an underground cryptocurrency called Black Coin. Bruce asked if there is a way to take down the network but Eddie replied that it is satellite based and there are thousands of members with the masks, making the network impossible to disrupt. Eddie advised him to destroy the mask and stop whatever he was doing. Bruce then got a call from Harvey, who he asked to look into the Ark M fund. Harvey told him that most of the funding came from a company called J. K. Holdings, whose main business was building private black site prisons that appeared to be using the inmates as subjects for medical experiments. Bruce further researched J. K. Holdings and discovered that they have secret, unregulated prisons known as "Arks" all around the world; and the latest, Ark M, was currently under construction on an island off the coast of Gotham. He looked at the site from across the bay with a surveyor's scope and saw that it was a massive compound, realizing the sheer scale of what he was up against.
The next day Bruce goes to Martha's apartment first thing in the morning. He suggested she lie low until the chaos in the city died down, but she told him that was impossible as she had just accepted Gordon's offer to be deputy mayor. He told her that she was putting a target on her back, but she said that she believed in what Gordon was trying to do and wanted to help rather than just watch the city collapse. He asked what she would do if it was all too big, and she replied that even then you have to try anyway, and that's what his father would have done. Bruce said "look how it turned out for him" and Martha said she would kiss him so she didn't slap him and left.
On the anniversary of his father's death, Bruce returned to the Zoo; which had been shut down years ago after the shooting. He contacted Sionis through the helmet and Black Mask offered him two hundred million dollars to stand back for a week, and said that the Party Animals will reduce their attacks in return. Bruce seemingly, reluctantly took the deal.[6]
Bruce took Sionis' money, but as soon as it was wired to his account he withdrew it all and used the cash to build a giant bat-symbol on the Memorial Light. He then went to an agreed meeting with Black Mask, and when he got there he remotely switched on the spotlight, creating a huge Bat-Signal in the sky and showing that he would not step aside. The Party Animals charged him and he easily fought them off, until Sionis had snipers start firing on his own men. Bruce tried to shield the Party Animals from the gunshots and Sionis took the opportunity to trap him in a net. Sionis told Bruce that he threw away his big chance and Bruce grabbed him. Sionis dislocated Bruce's arm but he was able to take the opportunity to plant a tracker on him.
Bruce revealed that he had a camera hidden on the roof and everything had been broadcast to all the news stations in Gotham, so that the people would be inspired to stand against the Party Animals, and an incendiary device he had left set off, burning the money away. Sionis mocked him for believing he had achieved something, and told him that money was the only hero in this story. The Party Animals beat, stabbed and set him on fire, then pushed him off the roof. Bruce managed to slow his fall with a parachute but still crashed hard to the ground and started fleeing on foot, but the GCPD spotted him and give chase, even firing on him with a minigun from a helicopter. He ran into a parking garage to escape into the tunnels, but Barbara Gordon followed him in and hit him with her squad car. She got out and pointed her gun at Bruce as he climbed but Bruce, defeated by what had happened, simply told her to shoot him and she let him go. Bruce made his way to the cave and tried to tend his wounds. Alfred came in and told Bruce that he would never help him again, and everything that happened now was on his head.[7]
Battered and bruised, Bruce stumbled to Croc's gym and told Waylon that he was Batman and needed his help. He revealed his secret identity to all his friends and although they were all furious at him, except Eddie who claimed he had worked it out weeks ago; they agreed to help him save the city. Eddie determined that the Party Animal's network was too big to be brought down, but the local server for Gotham City could be crashed. Bruce deduced that the data center must be on Sionis' headquarters, a yacht off the coast of the city. He had Ozzie fly him out to it in his single-engine plane, but by the time they reached it Ozzie had barely enough fuel to return to Gotham and told Bruce he could not stay behind for him. Bruce replied that he didn't want him or anyone else to and jumped from the plane onto the yacht.
Bruce quickly dispatched Sionis' minions, throwing them off the boat with life-jackets. Sionis came out to face Bruce and they had a brutal and violent fight through the ship, crashing through walls and floors with Bruce hammering blows onto Sionis. Sionis grabbed a cord and tried to strangle Bruce, but he stabbed Sionis through the mask and in the eyes with the ears on his cowl. Bruce threw Sionis overboard and blew up the ship with a string of grenades. He was thrown unconscious from the exploding boat and sank into the water. Before he could drown, Alfred rescued him in the Batmobile.[4]
Absolute Zero
Alfred patched up Bruce's wounds and agreed to join his crusade, but needed to return to London for a while to follow some leads. He told Bruce to lay low for a while and give himself time to heal but Bruce had no intentions of doing so, even modifying the cast Alfred had put on his broken arm with a grappling hook.
Hamilton Hill won the mayoral election and placed Gotham under martial law, ostensibly to "protect" the people from Batman; instituting a curfew and equipping the police with military-style equipment he had received from Sionis. All construction work in Gotham was shut down except for Ark M, which was being built by private crew from outside the city working for a company called JK Holdings. Bruce reached out to Mitchell "Matches" Malone, a childhood acquaintance who had become a skilled forger, to produce false work papers for him so he could get on the JK crew. A month after the Party Animals attacks, during an unseasonably cold April, he met with Matches on the Elliott Bridge. Matches gave him the papers but revealed that he had also snuck onto the crews himself and had been investigating the Ark M site for the last week. He told Bruce that it already had prisoners despite not being complete and claimed it was the worst prison he had ever seen. Matches suddenly dropped dead bleeding from his pores, seemingly killed by a biological weapon. As a group of militarized cops were nearby Bruce had grabbed the papers and Matches' phone and run.
On Matches' phone Bruce found pictures and videos he had taken of Ark M, which showed conditions to be hellish. It also included a list of scientists who were consulting on the project. A week after Matches' death, Bruce went to his memorial in Crime Alley and reunited with his friends, who had not seen him since he had attacked Black Mask's yacht. He told them how Matches had died and promised he would get justice/ He then attempted to leave but Waylon stopped him and said they needed to talk about Batman. Bruce insisted that there was nothing to say and he should have never made them a part of it, but they pointed out that he had been using their skills and experience to help him from the beginning. He told them to just get out of his way and let him do his work, but Waylon warned him he would die if he continued on his current path.
One of the scientists on Matches' list, Victor Fries, was the founder of a company called V-Core which had an office in Gotham. Three days after Matches' memorial, Bruce tried to break into V-Core during a freak snowstorm. As he was gliding through the streets the storm abruptly stopped and he was forced to evade police predator drones. As he was dodging their bullets Alfred called him from London and told him that Matches had been killed by a bacteria, but there was no record of it in any medical database. Bruce reached V-Core and ended the call. He then snuck in to V-Core disguised as a city engineer named "Pennyworth".
Bruce infiltrated the director's office and found multiple displays of prehistoric animals frozen in ice. The director entered and seemed to be convinced by Bruce's false identity papers, even telling him to feel free to check out the frozen specimens while he was working. Bruce asked if Victor and Nora Fries still oversaw the company and the director replied that in a sense they did. He revealed that Victor and Nora were among the bodies frozen in ice and introduced himself as Victor Fries Jr, their son. Bruce then asked what V-Core actually did as there were no records of their work and their office consumed enough power for ten city blocks. Victor revealed that they were a cryogenics company who froze the terminally ill until a cure could be found. Bruce then asked if anyone had ever been successfully revived and Victor replied that he was, as his parents had treated a childhood illness of his with cold therapy.
Victor turned to face his frozen parents and Bruce took the opportunity to search the office, believing he was distracted. On the desk he spotted a sample of frozen prehistoric bacteria. Meanwhile Victor says that his parents had told him that the treatment would be like a peaceful sleep, but in fact he felt everything and the pain was excruciating. Bruce spins around to see Victor looming over him, his eyes turned red and his skin turned blue with his hands frostbite black. Victor grabbed Bruce's face, and his veins turned blue radiating out from where Victor touched him.[8]
