Bruce Wayne is a businessman and vigilante who fights crime in Gotham City as the Batman.
History
Bruce Wayne was born into the wealthy Wayne Family of Gotham City, to Thomas and Martha Wayne. One night while returning from watching a movie at the Monarch Theater, Bruce's parents were shot dead by a mugger in an alley of Park Row. He swore to fight crime in order to avenge their murder and spent years in training. He eventually started dressing in a bat-like costume, while designing his own gadgets, and came to be called the "Batman". As the lone surviving member of the Wayne family, he also became the CEO of its business empire called the Wayne Enterprises, while using the Batcave underneath the Wayne Manor as base of operations for his vigilante career.[1] He eventually fathered a son named Damian Wayne.[2]
Joining Monitor's army
When the Harbinger started targeting antique dealers for artifacts, Bruce assumed it was Catwoman due to the same modus operandi. After the thief tripped an alarm at Leachman's Rarities, Batman went after her and soon found the thief was not who he believed to be. As he took the artifact away from her, the two got into a fight. When he failed to understand what she was saying that she claimed the multiverse in danger and she needed the artifact, she decided to take him to the Gotham of Earth-19.[3]
Batman was shocked upon seeing Earth-19's Gotham, as the gaslight-powered city was familiar but still strange. Harbinger gave him time too recover his senses and took him to a building, where he showed him the unconscious Catwoman of Earth-19. He learnt that she had taken her skills and this was was why she was in suspended animation. She also explained to him that multiverse consisting of 52 universes was being assaulted by a mysterious force and her side was building an army to stop them. She also stated that both sides were after powerful artifacts that could help them win, and the one he took from her was the Eternal Key, the one thing they needed the most to win.[2]
Harbinger stated that she was being pursued a mysterious entity working for her enemy and Batman handed her the Eternal Key after believing her. A horribly mutated Two-Face however soon bust in through the door and attacked the two. Two-Face revealed that he had planted the fake story of the Eternal Key, while it was actually what he needed to finally gain power, and fatally wounded Harbinger. After tossing his coin over which universe to attack, he picked Harbinger's own universe: Earth-48. As the dying Harbinger requested Batman to stop him, he struggled to think about what he should do next. Catwoman of Earth-19 soon showed up and stated they should honor her dying wish, but decided to summon three other champions she had recruited earlier.[2]
Out of Harbinger's champions, only Hal Jordan of Earth-13 believed in him. He quickly impressed Catwoman and Wonder Woman of Earth-17, though the Robin of Earth-43 continued to dislike him due to hatred of his own father. He also was told by Wonder Woman that they could go after Two-Face using Harbinger's orb. Learning that Two-Face had deceived them about the Eternal Key, the champions were dismayed, but he encouraged them to fight on. Agreeing with Robin's plan to hunt Two-Face down, he had Catwoman take them to Earth-48. Upon getting there however, Batman realized they were too late and Two-Face had begun the universe's destruction.[4]
Hal however saved all his allies from Earth-48's destruction using his magical lantern, while transporting them into the Bleed. As his shield began to crumble, the last surviving monitor Nix Uotan, who had recruited Harbinger, came to their rescue[5] and told them to distract Two-Face until he finished preparing weapons to take him down. After they were transported to Earth-17 and recovered their consciousness, Robin and Catwoman argued over Hal accepting the Monitor's request. Batman told them to be quiet and stated they'll be going after their enemy no matter what. As they tracked Two-Face down using Harbinger's orb, they were ambushed by bandits of the universe's desolate Earth.[6]
Selina was attacked by the mutated Bane of Earth-17 when she tried fleeing, resulting in Batman coming to her rescue. Bane however proved too much for him and Robin soon came to his rescue, but all three heroes were overpowered. Wonder Woman quickly took him down however, while Hal knocked out all the wastelanders, though exhausting his lantern's power in the process. When their enemies recovered unconscious, Batman fooled them into thinking that Hal would kill them if they didn't do as they said. Bane and his subordinates agreed to take them to Two-Face, who was staying at the Wayne Manor, pretending they had been captured.[7]
Batman was told by Two-Face that he was being given information on other universes by someone else and they will soon strike the Monitor himself. After Harvey refused to reveal who they were and tried to kill Robin, Batman ordered the heroes to strike him, but they found themselves overpowered. Catwoman stole the Eternal Key, but found he still had a lot of power. Meanwhile, Bane ordered his men to attack once Hal's energy was completely exhausted, but Wonder Woman held them off as other heroes fought Two-Face. As Two-Face overpowered Batman and Robin, Catwoman subdued him after having gained power from the Eternal key. The Monitor soon arrived and took the Eternal Key for safekeeping, while telling the heroes that they were the first group who had defeated such great odds. He asked them to continue fighting his foes threatening the multiverse, warning that an even greater threat was coming.[8]
Fight for Nil
Batman later arrived with his allies on Earth-13, after its heroes, Mecha Superman of Earth-44 and Bruce's fellow Justice League members Zatanna, the Flash and Cyborg, had beaten back the mysterious foe who was assaulting the world. Cyborg told him that they got involved in the situation while trying to find him after his disappearance from Earth-0, and Batman stated that there was a war coming which they needed to quickly prepare for.[9] After telling each other what they knew about the crisis threatening the multiverse, the heroes were called upon by Batman to band together against the threat. A mysterious man soon arrived to Earth-13 and after learning from Catwoman he was Lex Luthor of her world, Batman warned Supergirl of Earth-13 to not trust him.[10]
Luthor assured the heroes that he only wanted to help them against the crisis, however no one trusts him. Batman however agrees to let him join them, since he's an expert on technology, but warns that he will be put down if he tries betraying them. After Lex learnt that the monsters of Earth-13 had been loosed upon other worlds deliberately, Lex stated it was a distraction and asked Batman to think himself as the one doing so. Upon pondering why such destruction was being caused on other universes, Batman realized their enemy was going for the heart of the multiverse - the Monitor's homeworld Nil, and told his allies to get there quickly.[11] Batman arrives with his allies on Nil after the defenders the Monitor had hastily gathered fall, and encourages others to fight on.[12]
Batman fought the modified Nightmare Metallos of Earth-43 alongside Robin, Cyborg and Lord Zod of Earth-13, but the team soon found themselves outmatched. Batman then told Cyborg to transport a second team consisting of Green Lantern of Earth-13, Zatannas of Earth-0 and Earth-13, as well as the Mecha Superman to their location. At the same time, he told him to transport the other team consisting of Wonder Woman of Earth-17, his own world's Flash, Lex and Catwoman of Earth-13, as well as Supergirl of Earth-13 to a location away from battle so they can conduct reconnaissance.[13]
Mecha Superman went berserk after learning who they're fighting and after their foes withdraw, Batman tried to confront him. Realizing that on Earth-44 Metallo was only an imaginary figure made up by Superman's creator Clark Kent, in order to teach him the importance of being a hero, Batman stated he would have been proud of what he's become.[14] Batman's team later went to save Supergirl, Catwoman and Lex from the Metallos, with Robin revealing that the one commanding their enemies was Braniac of his world. Batman meanwhile decided to use the Monitor technology inside the Axis Tower against their enemies and told Lex accompany him.[15]
After Catwoman dealt with the Metallos threatening her and Robin using Harbinger's orb, Batman stated that the Monitor may have more such technology and told Lantern to hold the fort along with others. Arriving in the the Axis Tower, they found that the Monitor had been weakened, after the 52 versions he had created of himself to distract the enemy had been killed. Batman asked him to activate Nil's defenses, but was told that Brainiac had hacked into them. Luthor stated that they could use the Eternal Key to operate Nil's systems and they could use magic to insulate it from any outside access. Batman told Flash to get their world's Zatanna in order to accomplish it,[16] and she did as asked. The defense systems made quick work of the Metallos and killed Brainiac himself. Nix then sent the heroes back to their universes to recruit new allies and to be on guard against any new threat.[17]
The Earth Engine
When Wonder Woman of Earth-17 came upon a mysterious giant device after defeating Killer Croc who was guarding it, she called out to the heroes who had fought to protect Nil.[18] Batman realized the device was dormant and had Robin of Earth-43 interrogate Croc, who stated that it was an Earth Engine and he was told by a man to guard it, though he doesn't know why he simply agreed without asking anything in return. Catwoman of Earth-19 stated that she might have seen the device before in Luthor's plans. Batman told his allies to search for Earth Engines across the multiverse and recruited his world's Superman to go after Lex. The two confronted him on Earth-19 aboard his airship[19] and told him that they believed he was conspiring against the Monitor.[20]
Lex suited up in his warsuit to take on Batman and Superman when they refused to believe his claims of innocence. As they fought, Luthor's secretary Mercy Graves intervened. Luthor accidentally destroyed one of the engines of the ship while firing at Clark and fled, with Batman telling Superman to go after him. As he told Graves to evacuate the people on-board, she stated that the ship is already stabilized. Batman then took one of Luthor's airplanes, while telling her to get the ship to a safe port. Graves tried to stop him, but relented upon being told that she won't be successful. Batman attacked Lex while he was fighting Superman at his headquarters in Metropolis, but the two heroes soon got overpowered. The two were saved when Hawkgirl of Earth-19, the queen of the south, arrived and knocked Lex out with her Nth Metal Mace.[21]
As Hawkgirl continued striking at Luthor, Batman told her to calm down and Superman told Luthor to get out of his armor, which he reluctantly complied with. Hawkgirl told the heroes that she was familiar with their names, but didn't know any Earth-Prime where they stated they were from. As she tried killing Lex, Batman told her to stop, since he had information that could save many worlds. She realized that he was truthful and allowed him to interrogate Lex. Batman then called out Catwoman of Earth-19, who stated that she had found designs that looked same as the Earth Engine in Lex's drawings. Upon examining the Earth Engine, Lex stated that it was not what he was designing and showed them his true plans, which Batman realized were only about a small suggestion device capable of altering mindsets. Hawkgirl after learning about the multiverse and the danger it was in, decided to join the heroes. As Batman tells Catwoman to summon their allies, Hal does not respond.[22]
Batman went to Earth-44 with Superman to check on Hal, but found he and Mecha Superman already took care of the problem. Mecha Superman showed them the Earth Engine they found, but Batman stated that they can do nothing about it till they learned more. Back on Earth-19, he informed others about the Earth Engine on Earth-44, before deciding to go with Hawkgirl and Robin to Earth-43, while sending Superman along with Green Lantern and Wonder Woman to Earth-0 to uncover any Earth Engines hidden there. After reaching the House of Mystery on Earth-43, Robin warned his teammates that no one's ever come out alive from there. Inside, they found another Earth Engine, but were soon attacked by Dhampyre bats. Batman used ultrasonic frequency to drive them away, but it soon attracted the attention of the vampiric Batman of Earth-43.[23]
Despite proving a match for the vampire, Bruce soon learnt that he can't be defeated through physical means and decides to flee back to Earth-19 along with other heroes, since they already got what they came for. On Earth-19, Superman tells Batman that they found an Earth Engine in Lex's basement, but he believed he was innocent. Superman then stated that they appeared to be mind-control devices, but weren't supposed to be activated for now. Bruce agreed with Lantern's suggestion about informing the Monitor and told Wonder Woman to summon him. He later questioned Lex about what he had learnt, and was told that the Earth Engine was designed to prevent tampering, by driving everyone mad and making them kill themselves.[24]
After the Monitor arrived, Batman told him what they had learnt and stated the Earth Engines are meant to create an army to fight the Monitor, but only meant to be activated together. The Monitor agreed and decided to disable the contraption, despite being warned by Lex. This however resulted in an energy wave and the Earth Engine started overwhelming the minds of everyone, despite Lantern trying to envelop it in a force field. The Monitor, who took the brunt of the wave, started lashing out due to the madness inflicted by it.[25] Batman had the Lantern shield the heroes instead, negating the Earth Engine's effects on everyone, but the mad Monitor continued attacking them. Batman told Hawkgirl to bring her army to help, as their Nth metal armor seemed to fight back against the Earth Engine's influence partially, while also telling her to seek Aquaman's help. After she complied, he told Catwoman to send out a call to all heroes they knew, before telling everyone to attack the Monitor.[26]
As the heroes struggled to contain the Monitor, Zatannas of Earth-0 and Earth-13, Lord Zod and Supergirl of Earth 13, Flash and Cyborg of Earth-0, answered their call for help. After the magic users calmed the Monitor down temporarily, Batman had Hal shield them from the Earth Engine as well. Outside, Shayera helped in subduing the mad populace along with her soldiers and Aquaman agreed to help her after learning what was going on. The Monitor soon regained consciousness and told the heroes that they should throw the Earth Engine into the Bleed.[27] Superman of Earth-0 and the Mecha Superman did as he asked, freeing everyone on Earth-19 from its influence. When Catwoman informed the heroes that Lex was missing, Batman told everyone to spread out and find him.[28]
Catwoman soon discovered Lex, but was ambushed by the Vandal Savage of Earth-19, who had created the Earth Engines and was controlling Lex. Robin came to her rescue, but was soon outmatched. Batman himself intervened soon, but was attacked by Robin and Catwoman, who were being controlled by Savage using a suggestion device. Lex finished creating the control device which could activate all the Earth Engines,[28] but Hawkgirl soon bust in through the window after seeing her allies fighting. She was able to destroy Savage's suggestion device, freeing the heroes and Lex, who disabled the Earth Engines. With the threat over, Batman decided to trust Lex and handed him an orb of the Monitor, so he could call them whenever help was needed,[29]
Infinite Crisis
As the most powerful wave of Infinite Crisis struck, realities were torn asunder and cast adrift into the Bleed. This resulted in Gotham of Earth-19 and Gotham of Earth-0, which were adrift in the Bleed, to be merged together. Batman joined other champions to fight back against the new threat endangering the multiverse.[1]
