Answer me this, Bruce...how can you possibly kill a man who lives under your own skin?
- — The Joker src
Mental illness caused Bruce Wayne to think he was a hero - but in reality, Batman and The Joker were his own multiple personalities.
History
Bruce Wayne was born into a rich family, but his parents abused him for years. The toll led Bruce to become mentally ill and he eventually killed his parents. With the circumstances, Bruce wasn't tried as an adult and was imprisoned until he was an adult. In his mind, his parents were killed by a criminal and he had actually gone away to train in order to become a crimefighter. As Batman, he believed he had become a superhero, but in reality, he was a deranged vigilante. He also developed an alternate personality, The Joker, which Bruce initially interpreted as a separate entity and the true perpetrator of his violent acts. Bruce eventually decided to kill his nemesis, but The Joker revealed himself and exposed Bruce's life as a superhero as a lie. Finally understanding what he truly is, Bruce Wayne committed suicide.[1]
