Brunhilde is the leader of the Valkyries, Norse warrior women and water spirits who bring slain heroes to Valhalla. They are sworn to defend the Rhine Sister, sister to the Lady of the Lake.

She and her Valkyries were summoned by Odin to bring new heroes to the Valhalla. They came across the Inferior Five on Earth-Twelve, who were receiving a medal from the mayor of Megalopolis, and brought them to Odin.[1]

When Camelot (from a magical dimension) held a tournament, Brunhilde and the Valkyries traveled to take part, only for Wonder Woman to appear and ask the heroes for help in taking Paradise Island back from Ares. With the other heroes refusing, and Siegfried getting into a fight with Wonder Woman, Brunhilde broke up the fight and offered the Valkyries' aid to the Amazon. They engaged Ares' men in a losing battle until King Arthur and the other heroes from Camelot rode to their aid. With the battle won, Brunhilde and the heroes vowed to Diana that they would fight for her should she ever call.[2]

When Aquaman and Tempest came to the Rhine River to protect the Rhine Sister from the Thirst, Brunhilde and Grymhild lead them to her. As the Thirst attacks and discovers the Rhinegold, the one thing protecting the river, the Rhine Sister gave the Valkyries the option to lay down their weapons, but Bruhilde and Grymhild refused.[3] The two Valkyrie fought the Thirst's forces as well as Black Manta when he surfaced.[4]

With the Rhine Sister dead, and the Valkyries disbanded, Brunhilde and Grymhild accompanied Aquaman on a newly reformed Black Manta's sub. The three ventured into the Secret Sea, where they saw the Valkyries once more sparing in a New Valhalla. They chose to fight with Aquaman as they pursued the Thirst to Australia.

Brunhilde and Grymhild boarded the Thirst's ship, but were unable to escape as it was swallowed by the Rainbow Serpent, suffering severe wounds. Aquaman found them among the rubble and healed them. They followed the Moon River in the Rainbow Serpent's stomach, but Brunhilde and Grymhild were turned to the Thirst's undead army.[5]

With Aquaman's eventual triumph over the Thirst, the Rhine Sister, Brunhilde and Grymhild were all restored to full life.[6]

Heinrich Himmler's Project Andvarinaut was named after a magical ring in Norse mythology that came into possession of Brunhilde after she killed Sigurd.[7] The ring had a curse that was only lifted after Brunhilde threw herself on Sigurd's funeral pyre.[8] However, it is uncertain if this event actually transpired.
