Bud and Lou are the vicious pet hyenas of Harley Quinn who refers to them as her "babies". Initially owned by the Joker who used them to help him fight Batman, the two hyenas bonded mostly with Harley and ended up leaving with her after the couple's breakup because she was usually the one who fed them. When ever their owners were sent to Arkham Asylum, Bud and Lou were usually taken and held at the Gotham Zoo, where they had sired puppies with several of the zoo's female hyenas. They are named after the comedy duo Abbott and Costello.
Bud and Lou were created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm as characters in the DCAU. Their first appearance was in the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Harley and Ivy" (1993). Their comic debut would be in The Batman Adventures: Mad Love (1994), albeit part of the DC Animated Universe's continuity. Several years later, their first appearance in regular continuity would take place in Harley Quinn #4 (2001).
