Byla-Voq, also known as Byla-Esh[1] or simply Byla, is one of the Old Gods from Urgrund and the former guardian of the Necropolis of Warworld. He posed as a Phaelosian elder who told slave children on Warworld stories of the House of El.
History
When the Multiverse was young Olgrun, first and greatest of the Old Gods, created worlds full of wonders but he eventually fell to madness. The other Old Gods split his essence into seven "aspects" which they scattered across the Multiverse, each with a world built around it and cunning traps and puzzles to guard it from the unworthy. One of the aspects, the "Fire of Olgrun" was hidden in the centre of a constantly shifting city known as the Necropolis, which became the core of Warworld.[2] Byla was placed on Warworld to guard the Necropolis against the unworthy, and aid a good man who came to claim the Fire.[3]
Byla took the form of a Phaelosian slave and storyteller. Although he insisted all his stories were mere fiction, he revealed many secrets of Warworld's past that a mere slave could not know, and also showed that he had knowledge of the future. Many people suspected he was more than he appeared to be.[4][2]
When Superman and The Authority came to Warworld, Byla joined Midnighter's rebellion.[1] Superman and his gladiators escaped the arena and joined the rebelion in the catacombs of Warworld, where Byla told Superman the story of Olgrun.[2] Eventually Mongul launched an all-out assault on the catacombs, forcing Superman to journey into the Necropolis and attempt to take the Fire. Byla was waiting for him but told him that he could not simply give Superman the Fire and he needed to prove himself worthy. Byla transformed into a gigantic wormlike creature and challenged Superman to fight him.[3] Byla severely injured Superman's companion Kryl-Ux, but Superman saved him and was able to dodge past Byla to reach the centre of the Necropolis and claim the Fire.[5]
