Synopsis for "Source Material"

Captain Atom is depowered and is forced to wear a yellow and red costume. Against the advice of the Captain Atom Project staff, Nathaniel is insistent on continuing his superhero career without his powers.

Meanwhile, Peggy is tending Randy in a hospital following his rescue. She then suddenly bumps into Jeff Goslin, who has been trying to check up on her. Peggy breaks the news to Jeff that she is breaking their engagement.

Nathaniel travels to Gotham City to seek Batman for help in training him in non-powered heroics. He and Batman spar each other until the latter agrees to evaluate Nathaniel's performance.

In Colorado, General Eiling demand Doctor Megala for answers about the Silver Shield object that is currently glowing. Megala explains that when they have removed Silver Shield, they have inadvertently reactivated its dormant systems, which their purpose is unknown. However, the results are clear enough: the object's glow corresponds to a pulse in the Quantum Field that operates on the same frequency that Captain Atom and Major Force use to access their quantum abilities. In effect, Silver Shield is jamming their powers. Megala also notes that Silver Shield is steadily shrinking.

Captain Atom accompanied Batman to a murder scene; a man named Stan Trowell and his wife hung their children before hanging themselves. Straws are found on the scene in which Batman conclude that the Scarecrow is responsible for driving the Trowells to kill themselves.

Anton Sarrok has a nightmare of himself and his companions Megala, Damon and Ashana Long being lost in a desert. He wakes up and stating that he "must return."

Batman and Captain Atom subdue some criminals before heading to Gotham University, where Scarecrow is residing nearby and waiting for Batman. They break into Scarecrow's hideout, but are subjected to his Fear Toxin that he experimented on the Trowells. Captain Atom and Batman are sent into a nightmare depicting a Earth ravaged by a nuclear explosion. Fortunately, they soon break free from the illusion. An exhaustive Scarecrow, who has also exposed himself to the toxin, turns himself in.

After Scarecrow is sent to Arkham Asylum, Batman passes off his evaluation on Captain Atom as a good man, with or without powers.
