Our astronomers have checked, Captain Marvel, Jr.! There's no doubt these mysterious projectiles came from the outermost planet of our Solar System... Pluto! We don't know whether Pluto has aggressive designs against Earth! You are the only person who can find out! Therefore, we have decided to appoint you Earth's First Ambassador... to Pluto!
Secretary-General of United Nations Trygve Halvdan Lie

Captain Marvel, Jr. #111 is an issue of the series Captain Marvel, Jr. (Volume 1) with a cover date of July, 1952.

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr.: Ambassador to Pluto"

Large explosions occur on the Planet Mars and later on the Earth’s Moon. Prof. Edgewise tells Freddy Freeman at home that he figured that out some time ago and instead gives Freddy a “heat-inducing battery” that warms one from the pocket. When asked about the planetary explosions, the Professor says that they were fired from Pluto and another one is coming to the Earth right now! Freddy calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and flies out to find it’s a giant icicle being launched at them and breaks it to pieces. He reports this to the UN, who confirm that they’re being attacked by Pluto and appoint Captain Marvel, Jr. to investigate it as Earth’s 1st Ambassador to Pluto!

Junior flies out to Pluto, finding the current ruling species look like large-nosed Cyclopes with long, straight limb hair. In a few minutes, he figures out the language of Pluto and goes to see their ruler, who just says he’s attacking other planets to kill “rival war lords” he imagines are attacking them due to their smallness and orders his men to attack the World’s Mightiest Boy when he politely asks they not attack other planets. This does little to the Boy in Blue until he punches over the War Lord and wrecks one of their icicle weapons. He wonders how to persuade them better to not just keep firing more. While out in a village, other Plutonians offer he come inside to have some steaming yurx before he catches his death of zmzx. Junior figures that the War Lords of Pluto are the problem and are seizing the warmth they need to survive to demand that they turn over the “enemy spy” to their War Lord, Nyxtght. Realizing this will endanger the people he’s staying with, he turns back into Freddy, who the Plutonians believe “hardly look like the same boy!” Freddy soon steps up to a microphone that carries “cold waves” to the rest of Pluto and tells them that the War Lords are playing with not only their own lives, but the lives of other planets in ghastly warfare and do nothing to help people, instead stealing warmth to demand obedience. The Plutonians soon find that their heat has been turned off and Freddy finds he can’t shout the magic words before he also freeze into a block like the Plutonians he’s staying with. Nyxtght threatens that any who oppose him will also be frozen, believing Freddy dead. However, Freddy finds the Heat-Inducing Battery he got from the Professor activated when it became too cold and melts the ice enough that he can speak again and calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. once more. He leaves the Battery with the kind Plutonians and breaks down War Lord’s doors to demand he abdicate and turn over the heat generators’ control to the people and brings democracy to Pluto. The kind Plutonians thank Junior as he leaves, saying they’ll make him some hot yurx soup again when he returns. Later, Freddy says that his invention helped bring peace to Pluto, but doesn’t go into the details too deeply, only that it was a big success!

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "A Day in the Life of Captain Marvel, Jr., World's Mightiest Boy"

Freddy Freeman is woken up by Mrs. Wagner and reaches to pick up his crutch. He goes down to have breakfast with the other common boarders: Prof. Edgewise, Leroy Marks, Red O’Riley, Office Jim Bellows and Mrs. Wagner. He finds Leroy tells bad jokes (as usual), Prof. Edgewise has created a staircase you can kill caterpillars with and that Officer Jim and Red are playing checkers yet again. Freddy soon heads to work and gets a delivery of the Daily Gazette, revealing there’s a maniac on a window ledge “defying” the police and he decides to help by calling CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. He soon finds the madman taking potshots from a tall building and punches him over and takes him down to be arrested. Later, Freddy is relaxing at home when he hears on the police radio that bandits in a bulletproof limo have robbed the Delar Jewelry Store and are heading due north on the State Highway, so he calls CAPTAIN MARVEL again to fly out and punch their car into wreckage. Freddy soon starts walking back to Mrs. Wagner’s and smells gas from the Witherspoon House and tries to shut off their gas (presuming some kids just opened their window and turned on their gas stove before leaving) and nearly passing out before he calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Junior once more. He pushes the windows open and gets all the gas out and locks the doors and windows after he leaves so this won’t happen again. By 2am, Freddy gets back home and notes that he’ll probably have to catch up on reading a book he was keen on the next night. He sets his crutch down and goes to sleep again, ending a day in the life of Captain Marvel, Jr.

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. and The Menace of the Miser"

Freddy Freeman finds Jeremy Grattle, infamous miser, is at his Newsstand, but walks on by to pick a paper from the trash. Red O’Riley says he wasn’t always this way, but got more stingy over time, since he was once rich and well-liked in town. An evil child on a rooftop decides to dump liquid roofing tar on Grattle despite another child’s worries he’ll get hurt and Freddy calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to stop him from being killed by a barrel of hot tar as Captain Marvel, Jr. The kids sheepishly apologize and Junior soon hands Mr. Grattle his wallet back, finding he carries most of his money on him (since he hates banks.) Later, Freddy sees some kids playing football and the ball goes through Grattle’s window. Though it looks like he’s about to beat a child with his cane, the boy slips and nearly falls down his front steps and Grattle becomes sincerely worried about him, but finds he’s fine. Returning to his gruff nature, he returns the football and says not to let it happen again or he’ll cane a child. Freddy wonders what this strange kindness from him may indicate. Later, he finds Grattle drinking from a dish of milk Mrs. Wagner leaves out for homeless cats, though when he calls him out on it, Grattle has no dignity about anything that costs money being something not to be wasted on animals. Freddy points out he could just buy his own milk (or buy a home for starving animals) with how rich he is, but Grattle shakes his cane at him and leaves.

At home, Grattle complains that he’s actually really broke and doesn’t have enough money to get by, having pawned most of his riches and maintains the façade of being a miser to not feel so stigmatized for his poverty. Two goons break into his house and demand his money, thinking he’s the richest man in town, but they find his wallet is stuffed with paper. Angry that they think he’s lying to them, they pull a gun on him. Outside the pawnshop, Freddy spots something and talks to the pawnbroker, discovering Grattle’s secret and calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to go talk to him as Captain Marvel, Jr. He quickly punches out the goons and Grattle admits he’s flat broke and didn’t let people into his house because there’s no furniture left. Junior says he saw his own silver-headed cane in the pawn shop and encourages him that things will improve over time. Later, Freddy notes that Grattle got a job as a gardener and all that he needed was what everyone needs: understanding and sympathy.
