Captain Marvel, Jr. #115 is an issue of the series Captain Marvel, Jr. (Volume 1) with a cover date of November, 1952.

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. Battles The Mad Mongol Monster!"

Freddy Freeman sees that a third catastrophe has occurred with an Allied ammo dump exploding and decides to involve himself in the Korean War by calling CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. Arriving at an Allied ammo center in Korea, he consults with a Major General who says that the North Koreans have been sending “Globes of Fire” at him with astounding accuracy, no matter how much camouflage they use. He takes him to his office and shows him a TV screen showing a racial caricature he calls the “Mongol Monster” a brutish warlord who dresses like a Templar Knight with chain mail and a tabard. He soon gets a call that the Globes of Fire are on their way and Junior flies outside to see they are intercepting their Sabre jets and punches them into dust, but a third one retreats, so he follows it to a large European castle in Korea. Within, he sees that the Globes of Fire are driven by pilots inside. The pilot pleads for mercy from the Mongol Monster, but he notes that he saw him on his Telephoto Visi-Screen and was followed, so he kills him and then attacks Junior, who is able to knock him back. The Mongol Monster runs into his fortress and closes a metal door, but Junior punches through it and goes after him. The Mongol Monster says he’s launched the Globes of Fire. Junior punches him over and goes out to destroy the Globes of Fire, finding these ones are filled with explosives and their fiery exterior prevents them from being shot down with bullets, but he punches them out. Returning to the fortress, he finds the Mongol Monster missing and returns to being Freddy in hopes he’ll reveal himself… but when he does, it’s knocking out Freddy from behind and leaving him in a Globe of Fire filled with TNT, headed towards Allied lines! What’s more, he finds the interior of the Globe of Fire is soundproof, so calling CAPTAIN MARVEL is meaningless! Instead, he tries to steer the Globe of Fire back into the Mongol Monster’s fortress and calls CAPTAIN MARVEL at the exact moment it explodes into the Mongol Monster to become Captain Marvel, Jr., finding the Mongol Monster seemingly dead. A week later, Freddy notes that ammo is back up to attacking and that the Globes of Fire and the Mongol Monster are gone.

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. and The Thousand Eyed Idol of Doom!"

Freddy Freeman is peddling the Daily Gazette, which says that the Army is looking into the existence of flying saucers. To look into things further, Freddy calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and flies off to talk to some Army men at a nearby airbase. He’s told that the saucers have been coming around their newest jet planes and defense plants and it’s been showing up in other countries, meaning it’s likely not the Communists. Two of the saucers soon appear and Junior flies out to encounter them, finding that they aren’t saucers… but gigantic eyes! When he punches one, it explodes into a horrible splash of aqueous humor. Not noticing a second one is following him, he thinks perhaps these eyes are alive and goes home to Mrs. Wagner’s, ignoring his paranoia that he’s being watched. He heads to bed for the night as Freddy and finds a tin frog in his bed, likely left by prankster boarder Leroy Marks. Deciding not to give him the attention he demands, he goes to bed without reacting to it. Outside his window, the Eye Saucer floats in and blasts him with a hypnotic force, but retreats when Leroy tries to apologize to a sleeping Freddy… and finds he’s seemingly dead!

Everyone at Mrs. Wagner’s is horribly depressed that Freddy has died as the Eye sneaks into a funeral parlor in the middle of the day while surrounded by mourners and steals him away with its disturbingly prehensile eyelashes. The mourners are shocked and confused as the Eye returns to its owner, the Thousand Eyed Idol of Doom, a three-fingered alien giant with presumably a thousand eyes. He is unwilling to believe that Freddy destroyed one of his Eyes as Freddy wakes from his death-like state to find the Thousand Eyed Idol trying to pull him apart to stop the “mighty being” that he is, only for him to call CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Junior once more and starts destroying Eyes left and right. Eventually, he sends all of his apparently detachable Eyes to stop Junior, but he destroys them all and the Idol, unable to see, falls off a cliff. Junior returns to Earth and later, Freddy finds his friends are happy to see him alive and well. He notes that if there are any more of those “saucers” left, they won’t have anywhere to return to.

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. and The Curse of the Fire Demon"

Freddy Freeman is peddling papers when he hears fire engines and calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. to see if he can help put out the fire too, finding the E-Z Rest Mattress Company is going up. He detaches an excavator scoop and picks up a big scoop of wet beach sand to put out the fire. A small, simian fire spirit, the Fire Demon, appears and is furious at Junior for putting out “his” fire, saying that he wasn’t “responsible” for starting the fire, but it is his job to make fires burn. Junior kicks him angrily in the tailbone and yanks him by his fire-lit tail and tells him that he needs to only put out fires when he’s around. The Fire Demon, angered, inflicts a curse upon him…

Later, Freddy is heading to Mrs. Wagner’s, not noticing a man trying to use a blowtorch near him… cannot and it sputters out! At home, Mrs. Wagner can’t light the stove and Leroy Marks can’t use an oil burner either. Freddy quickly realizes the curse means fire’s go out when near him, meaning they’re soon to freeze in the cold of a New York City autumn night. Thus, he calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Junior once more and finds a man’s car has stopped on the tracks (since a combustion engine technically contains fire) and decides to go find the Fire Demon to fix this. He soon finds the NYFD have an easier job when he shows up to a fire that goes out immediately, but a firefighter finds he can’t light his pipe on the job! Junior flies off to try to get high in the sky enough that he won’t shut off all kinds of furnaces and tries to go to the hottest place in town: a blast furnace in a steel mill… which also goes out, forcing a foreman to send all the steel workers home. Junior is ashamed that he’s ruining livelihoods now and goes to live in the woods where he won’t stop anyone from living a life of warmth. The Fire Demon appears and mocks him, but when Junior gets close to him, he finds the fire on his tail is going out and the Fire Demon is upset at how cold it’s becoming without it! Junior grabs him by the tail again and demands he undo the curse before he freezes, so the Fire Demon acquiesces and Junior starts a test campfire to show that it’s gone as the Fire Demon’s flame returns. The next day, Freddy notes that uncontrolled fires are bad, but fire is very important to the modern human living and hopefully never stops!

Trivia

  • Despite the cover, the Thousand Eyed Idol of Doom has a normal Caucasian skin tone and far more eyes than shown. Luckily, they don't seem to eject gore and viscera when destroyed, instead exploding in green goo. The ocular villain also has a big crown on and a head of white hair.
  • This issue marks the first foray of Captain Marvel, Jr. into the Marvel Family's short-lived help during the Korean War, which always includes fighting a strange, heavily-racist Korean warlord and then immediately leaving to let UN forces do the rest of the fighting themselves.
  • It is not made clear how hypnotism can somehow make Freddy seem realistically dead to not only Leroy Marks, but also at least two licensed medical doctors.
