Now wonder he came to the surface! He's going to attack that merchant ship! You've certainly got a nasty disposition! As soon as I quiet you down, I'll listen to your side of the story! Oh, I see! Captain Marvel, Jr. #48 is an issue of the series Captain Marvel, Jr. (Volume 1) with a cover date of April, 1947.
Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "None Came Back"
An elderly woodsman named Tim tells a modern-day naturalist, Hank Petrie, about a rare bird spotted in the nearby forest which has an amazing golden crest. However, he warns that if you go into the Lost Forest, you’ll never come out again! Petrie tries to go out and do so anyways. Soon enough, Woodsy Tim finds Justice of the Peace Clem Whittacker who is going into the Lost Forest to go paint the gold crested bird, ignoring his doctor’s advice for rest. He coughs as the golden bird flies around. Soon enough, Tim finds a beefy city man who is thinking about taking the bird for himself to sell for thousands. Tim is further stunned when a young lady comes by just trying to get out of town for a while. She thinks to herself how she’s “Bubbles” Blake, an heiress who needs some time off from her busy lifestyle. Soon after, Captain Marvel, Jr. comes by trying to find Bubbles, whose family have called him in to help finding her. Tim tells him all five people who went in are going to probably get killed, since the Forest is also full of quicksand spots and wild animals, but that Junior will probably be alright.
Meanwhile, Hank finds the Golden Crested Bird (the rarest bird on Earth) and tries to trap it alive and tries to swipe at it with a butterfly net, only to fall into quicksand, forcing him to call for help as Junior flies in to drag him back to safety. Hank soon runs into Bubbles and Junior bows to her and says she needs to go home now. She refuses and Hank soon agrees with her assertiveness. She immediately falls for him and Junior figures on how he should go about fixing this then. He decides to hang close by as Justice Whittacker tries to stay quiet and urges Hank and Bubbles to do the same as he wants to paint the Golden Crested Bird before the sun goes down, especially since he can’t stop coughing, which also scares off the bird. The other two try to cage the bird to help them both out, but they’re suddenly attacked by a bear! Bubbles faints and Junior flies in to punch out the bear. Junior decides to keep his cards close to him, since Hank and Bubbles seem close to each other now and catches the Golden Crested Bird for Hank. However, the roughneck from before pulls a gun and demands the bird, but runs fast into the Lost Forest and sinks into the quicksand, drowning in it. Junior finds he’s too late to save him and drags the Golden Crested Bird back to them. Hank decides that he’s not only going to release the Golden Crested Bird, but he’s also going to build a cabin there and live in the Lost Forest! Justice Whittacker marries them in the Lost Forest, but then dies, having managed to do his final act, painting the Golden Crested Bird. Hank and Bubbles treasure the painting and Junior says he’ll explain it to Bubbles’ parents after all. Junior flies out of the Lost Forest, finding two died in the Forest and two remained there and Captain Marvel never left it as he returns to being Freddy, who didn’t actually go into the Forest either.

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. meets Jumbo the Whale"
Jumbo is the largest and whitest sperm whale in the ocean, and is in a death battle with Erik, a rival black sperm whale. Jumbo wins and is hailed as Lord of his Domain. A large ship enters Jumbo’s waters one day and he rams it, buckling a plate and essentially sinking the ship. The men are forced to abandon ship and angrily watch as Jumbo mocks them. Some time later, Freddy Freeman is peddling papers and regular customer Mr. Rodgers is lost in thought about his sunken ship that he’s been losing to Jumbo. Freddy is shocked to hear about it and a man runs in with a radiogram from the Marie Valencia, who has located Jumbo as is being attacked. Freddy calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and stop Jumbo from sinking ships. He flies out 5,000 miles to find the Marie Valencia foundering as Jumbo moves in for the breaking shot, so he punches the whale on the head and then throws it around by the tail into the water. A defeated Jumbo leaves and the crew of the Marie Valencia evacuate, but are too proud to take directions from the World’s Mightiest Boy. Instead, he returns to being Freddy, who they rescue and drag aboard, claiming he was a stowaway.
Jumbo finds his subjects no longer respect him after losing to Captain Marvel Junior and so he eats the boat of survivors from the sinking ship. Freddy runs into one of Jumbo’s teeth and is dazed for long enough that the boat is swallowed. They light up a match in the whale’s dark stomach and worries that, even if he turns into Junior again, the rest of the crew could drown if he can’t get them to the surface in time. The fish recognize that Jumbo has eaten the supposed “Legged Fish” and he’s soon warned of another merchant ship arriving. He goes to attack it and when Jumbo opens his mouth at the surface, Freddy calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Capt. Marvel, Jr. He punches over Jumbo to stop him from attacking more ships, but then realizes that he can also speak Whalesong, learning that King Jumbo fears his sovereignty being invaded by ships. Junior promises that the ships won’t disrupt his rule over the sea and Freddy later says that sailors now drop food for Jumbo and he hasn’t attacked anyone since.
