Synopsis for "The City of Crime"

A massive crime wave sweeps the city, but the police are unable to catch any of the parties responsible. Captain Marvel Jr. investigates and finds out the crooks are using a helicopter to escape into the darkness of night, and hiding out in "Crime City", an old ghost town outside city limits, explaining why they're never caught. He's caught and "arrested" by the criminals there for preventing crime. After a sham of a trial, Jr.'s sentenced to die in the electric chair, which does nothing to him. He smashes down all the old buildings, and flies the leader of the operation to jail by grabbing the tailfin of the helicopter.

Synopsis for "The Idol of Theft"

In ancient times, an old wizard was on his way to gift an idol of jade to the emperor, when he was ambushed by thieves. They offered to spare him if he would bless the idol so it would protect them from capture, but once he did, they killed him, and he instead cursed it.

In the present, Cathaway, a collector of relics, ruminates on how he's offered to buy the jade idol from the museum where it's now displayed. Then, since they won't sell it, he decides he's just going to take it, the museum's willingness be damned, and runs out with it. Right into Freddy Freeman, who's making his usual delivery of the day's paper to the night watchman. He transforms and comes after the thief, but Cathaway escapes when a huge statue suddenly tips over and falls on Jr. as if by some mystical provenance. The young hero's unhurt, of course, but Cathaway's gone without a trace by the time he hoists the statue up again. Unfortunately for him, the guard recognized Cathaway from an earlier visit to make an offer on the idol, and he reads the morning paper to realize he's a wanted man for swiping the idol.

The next day, Jr. spots Cathaway driving to the emporium of Yuan Chang, Oriental art trader. Cathaway tries to get him to help hide the idol, but Chang knows its history and refuses to have any part of it. Jr. pursues Cathaway to an army shelling range, and is knocked out by a shell going off right next to him. Cathaway's relieved the power of the idol protected him, but then it comes to life! Warning him that he'll never be captured while he has it, but he'll always be on the run because of stealing it. At the statue's admonition, he returns it to the museum. Jr. reveals the idol could only talk because he used ventriloquism, but then the idol mysteriously says there's much the young do not know.

Synopsis for "The Terrible Mr. Silence"

Pop Drake and his grandson Willy come by Freddy's newsstand to pick up a paper. Reading about a rich man's murder, old man Drake is glad that, despite being descended from the great Francis Drake, his family no longer has any wealth or fame, so nobody will bother them. Unfortunately for them, he's wrong, as a masked villain emerges from a secret compartment behind the family's portrait of the famed buccaneer. This Mr. Silence has come to take "the most precious thing you have": the grandfather's life. He shoots Pop Drake, but escapes when Captain Marvel Jr. shows up.

Freddy goes to talk to Mrs. Amelia Drake, a relative of theirs, about money for Pop Drake's funeral. Unfortunately, he arrives just after Mr. Silence has done her in too. They cosh Freddy and leave the gun in his hand to frame him for the murder. Instead of hanging around to try to defend himself to the police, Freddy transforms and flies off. In the paper he sees that buried treasure hidden by Francis Drake was found, and is to be divided up among his surviving heirs. Obviously, Mr. Silence must be a family member killing off others from the same lineage to have all the booty to himself. Jr. pretends to be sleeping in Willy's bed, and by doing so catches Silence when he comes to assassinate the boy.

Synopsis for "Little Sir Echo"

Freddy visits an echo cave, but while he's there, Sir Echo, the imp that supplies the echoes, gets tired of only repeating what people say endlessly, and goes on strike. He goes into town and orders all the police to stay in that night, pretending to be the mayor (because he can perfectly mimic anyone's voice), and let crime run rampant. He even gives Captain Marvel Jr. trouble, because he can mimic the boy's voice too and call out his magic word to revert Jr. to his mortal form as many times as it takes. Freddy manages to trick Sir Echo into being the one to say his magic word and transform him, allowing him to grab the imp's mouth and threaten to hold it shut for years if that's what it takes to get him to do his job again. Resigned to his fate, Sir Echo resumes repeating other people's words.
