Synopsis for Capt. Marvel Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. Fights the Cosmic War Dust!"

A cosmic cloud of dust sweeps across Pluto, making everyone on Pluto kill each other. Somehow from his window, Prof. Edgewise (who is now rooming at Mrs. Wagner's Boarding House) with his Ultra-Electronic Telescope and wonders the ramifications of it… before he just goes down to dinner. Freddy mildly asks about his work and he just says that it's very important and he's done plenty of amazing things, but will be languished with neglect by the rest of the world. Another boarder whispers to Freddy that Edgewise is crazy, but Freddy says he's just “eccentric.” Later, he's able to find the telescope can see the planet Neptune and that all the trees on Pluto have killed each other. To look into things, he calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and flies off to see the Plutonian Tree War while Prof. Edgewise disassembles his telescope, thinking he imagined seeing a flying boy in this modern world. When Junior gets to Neptune, he finds that the stone-like people are all fighting with each other, turning each other into dust, killing them and Junior realizes the threat of this Cosmic War Dust. Heading to Saturn, he finds the caveman population all attacking each others. He manages to take all their clubs, but they merely devolve into fistfights, so Junior just pushes a giant planetoid at them, which scares everyone into retreating into the underground, which will keep them away from the Dust. He soon pushes the planetoid back out and goes to Jupiter, finding nobody lives there! Further, when he gets to Mars, he finds that it's populated by living cacti with surprisingly elastic tendrils, but manages to punch one out when it opens its mouth. This seems to bring the Martian Cactus to a reasonable state and Junior quickly learns his Martian language, warning them all to get underground. The Cactus tells him to see the “Root-of-All-Things,” who lives in an underground canal, finding that it's a giant green one-eyed monster attached to the roots of every Martian Cactus. The Root-of-All-Things doesn't seem to understand both the concept of beings that aren't attached to it or the idea of dissent from the other creatures, since they're all connected, only for it to suddenly attack him! Junior realizes that the Dust has arrived and spins the entire planet Mars to create enough centrifugal force to make the Dust fly off the planet, noting it'll return back to normal rotational speed soon enough.

He soon realizes that the Dust is coming to Earth and starts assembling a punch of junk in a junkyard into a giant horseshoe magnet as Mrs. Wagner's Boarding House devolves into mad fistfights. By flying the huge magnet into the ionosphere, it become magnetized and removes the Dust, which Junior has figured is electrical in nature (since it affects the human brain) and throws the magnet into the Sun. Later, Freddy returns and asks why everyone looks like they were fighting and they meekly try not to answer as Prof. Edgewise says they lost their tempers… but are fine now. Mrs. Wagner is happy it's over.

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. and The Four Lives of Freddy Freeman!"

The Circus has come to town and Freddy Freeman is there to see it. Suddenly, a man runs to tries to leg it up to the trapeze platform, so Freddy calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. to stop him as he climbs the tightrope and drags him down. The man curses the “Great Swami” when he's dragged down and says that he dreamed of being a tightrope walker because of him. Later, he finds the Great Swami is a fortune teller who showed the man an alternate future where he didn't become a farmer. He decided that he'd try to be a tightrope walker after losing all his money as a farmer. He goes off to find him and returns to being Freddy so he can talk to him. Entering, the Great Swami recognizes him as an “unbeliever,” which is enough to convince Freddy to try it. He spins a wheel and it stops on a number and he has Freddy look into his crystal ball. Within, he sees a ship in a storm where Freddy Freeman is a loyal cabin boy, who ends up dying on his ship trying to retrieve his “good luck mascot,” which ends up being a dog and Freddy says he had to swim his way out!

Freddy says this is ridiculous and could never happen, so the Great Swami shows him another vision where the police are having a shootout with gangsters, who have called in the FBI's best special agent, Freddy Freeman! The police don't believe him until he shows off his credentials and walks in amid the gunfire, since the goons stop firing at him and he manages to enter and orders them to surrender, so they do and also saves a dog. When the cops asks how he didn't get shot, only for Freddy to say “they missed!” Freddy says this is just as unrealistic, so the Great Swami tries out another one.

In the next vision, Freddy is a scientist who uses a large machine to harness the power of solar energy and then saves a dog and then gets blasted out of his lab, hitting himself in the head, which doesn't hurt him. Freddy says he's grown tired of this idea altogether and says that the Great Swami is a swindler and calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and turns him over, finding that he just stole all the farmer's money too, used his Wheel of Fortune to hypnotize people and people just generally see whatever they want in the crystal ball, which he breaks. He soon carries him off to prison. Later, Freddy says he has a perfect fourth life as Captain Marvel, Jr. He figures that from the visions, he actually just wanted a dog and happens to find one that is also named Rover...

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. and Sivana, Jr.'s Friendly Robot"

Freddy Freeman comes into his room at Mrs. Wagner's to smell a strange burning smell and finds a bomb under his bed, calling CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. to fly it outside, but finds there's nobody nearby. However, when he leaves, Sivana, Jr. pops out of a fake tree he was hiding in and decides he has to kill Freddy Freeman to become “Prince of the Universe.” To that end, the World's Wickedest Boy creates a “Friendly Robot” that will gain Freddy's confidence until he has him kill him. He soon installs him with a mechanical brain and a dickie and necktie to make him look happy. The Friendly Robot puts on a funnel-shaped hat and enjoys it. The next day, Sivana, Jr. has Friendly Robot jump off a bridge where Freddy would find him, calling CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and saves him, finding out he's a robot. Friendly Robot claims he is highly depressed and wanted to kill himself because he's got rusted-out joints. Sivana, Jr. watches nearby, snickering. Later, Friendly Robot is taken to Mrs. Wagner's to convalesce and meets Freddy Freeman. Friendly Robot is oiled to work smoothly again and says that he was created to be a servant, but instead he rebelled and left him. He admits that the real reason was jumping off a bridge was that he was lonely in the world. Freddy says that he's his friend now and invites him downstairs. Mr. Marks is shocked and Freddy decides to name him “Mr. Tinny” and offers him some soup, but when he balks at it (if politely,) he instead whispers to Red O'Riley to pick up some oil fro him to drink, which he prefers much better. That night, Mr. Tinny just starts sleeping in Freddy's bed, but finds that he can't kill him, understanding it's wrong and leaves. In the morning, Freddy finds a good-bye note from Mr. Tinny, which says that he's not “good enough” to be anybody's friend. Freddy goes to go find it and soon heads to O'Riley's Gas Station to find him. Red says that he saw him taking the highway out of town, drawing some attention. Freddy proceeds to walk a few miles into the woods, hoping to find him, not knowing Mr. Tinny is at Sivana, Jr.'s secret laboratory nearby. Mr. Tinny asks Sivana, Jr. to just punish him… only for Sivana, Jr. to decide to do so by melting him to slag. Freddy soon finds the cabin and Young Thaddeus tries to shoot at him with his Heat Ray Disintegrator instead, but Mr. Tinny tries to wrestle the gun from him, making him hit a tree instead. Freddy sees a tree light on fire and decides to call CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. Junior flies in and punches over Young Thaddeus after he takes a Heat Ray shot to the chest to protect Mr. Tinny. Later, Freddy says that Sivana, Jr. is back in reform school again and Mr. Tinny has become a deliveryman for the Daily Gazette and lives at Mrs. Wagner's too.

Synopsis for Capt. Marvel, Jr.: "Capt. Marvel, Jr. Fights The Great Bird Robbery"

Mrs. Wagner is feeding chickens in her formerly-empty backyard until they suddenly turn their heads and turn to look in one direction and fly over their fence and leave. Freddy calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. to go after them and finds the hens are now causing a traffic jam. He manages to wrestle them back into their coop and wonders why they're so rambunctious. Elsewhere, Pedro the Parrot tries to leave his owner's shoulder to go to the seas, only for Junior to drag it back and soon finds a flock of songbirds flying near a plane's engines, and pulls the plane out of the way. He soon finds canaries leaving town too and decides to consult Prof. James Osgood, a famed ornithologist, who just says that it's really weird if all the birds were going west (which they are.) Elsewhere, on a remote island archipelago, an evil man in a pith helmet and khakis is using a Homing Magnet, which he thinks is going to disrupt society more than if he stole all the gold in the world! Junior overhears about the mass migration and flies off to go find more of them. Below, a stampede of turkeys breaks down a fence and confuse a farmer and join up with the other birds. Junior realizes this will destroy the fowl and egg economies altogether. He soon finds the Homing Magnet. He finds the evil man, who just calls himself “The Bird Thief” and says he's going to hold all the world's birds ransom. Junior realizes that without birds in their ecological niche, insects will destroy all crops, and not having chicken and eggs will create massive famine. The Bird Thief demands $1,000,000,000 and Junior decides to just break the machine, but the Bird Thief tells him that he's got it loaded with enough TNT to cause a tidal wave that would drown millions. Thus, Junior backs out for now and returns to being Freddy to sneak in. Instead of being confused and startled like Freddy thinks he'll be, the Bird Thief instead just hits him with a club and Freddy wakes up, as usual, bound and gagged, but this time he's in a cage filled with bald eagles to claw him to death, but while he's broadcasting his demands, one of the eagles rips off his gag with its beak. He calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and just punches the Bird Thief, making him drop the button-exploder and then wrecks the Homing Magnet anyways. Later, the Bird Thief is in prison and Mrs. Wagner says that it's good that the bird crisis ended.

Trivia

  • Despite the cover, Mr. Tinny looks entirely different and doesn't strike Sivana, Jr., instead he's mostly subservient and the most he does to stop him is to try to take a gun from him.
    • Once again, Sivana, Jr.'s hair is white instead of brown.
  • With this issue, Prof. Edgewise moves in to Mrs. Wagner's Boarding House out of nowhere and now looks entirely different than he had before, going from a spindly old man with little hair to a portly, jolly man with a full head of white hair.
  • This issue marks another Apocalypse on several planets of the Solar System:
    • The Tree-Men of Pluto all kill each other.
    • The Rock-Men of Neptune all kill each other.
    • Jupiter they claim is already bereft of life entirely
      • Further, they just don't go to Uranus at all!
      • It's also not clear how or even why the Cosmic War Dust travels from planet to planet and only seems to go to populated planets.
