Synopsis for Captain Marvel: "Captain Marvel Battles Sivana's Voodoo Curse"

Captain Marvel has put Doctor Sivana in jail yet again, but ends up catching a corner of his cape in the jail door, letting it tear off. Captain Marvel tells a guard not to mind it and that he’ll be back in a week to testify against him. Sivana is under direct and heavy guard of a man pointing a rifle at his head most of the day until he looks up the concept of voodoo in a dictionary. To that end, he creates a “voodoo doll” of Captain Marvel from his cape shred and tries to use it during his trial. Stabbing a needle into the doll, Sivana finds that it mostly just itches to Captain Marvel and starts to have an attack of itching and scratching. In the fracas, Sivana escapes from his own trial and runs off into the streets of NYC to get to one of his preset laboratory hideouts. Tossing the voodoo doll into a deep freezer, Captain Marvel finds he’s frozen right next to Sivana and cannot move as Sivana runs behind him and kicks him in the rear several times. Trying to use a diamond-cutting saw to attack him, he finds it also isn’t working against the World’s Mightiest Mortal. Sivana realizes now he’ll have to deal with Captain Marvel’s frozen body and manages to lug him into a closet. Suddenly, Sivana’s power goes out due to him not paying his power bill, unfreezing the doll, but Sivana uses a small model set to make the voodoo doll for Captain Marvel head towards a volcano erupting nearby. Using a tiny voicebox, Sivana tries to make him call SHAZAM, which forces Captain Marvel to do so while next to a volcano! However, Captain Marvel suddenly returns and soundly defeats Sivana! He reveals that Captain Marvel had his mouth full of lava when he tried to make him call SHAZAM, meaning he didn’t return Billy at all and just came back to defeat him. Later, a maddened Sivana plays with normal dolls in a delirious state in his cell.

Synopsis for Captain Marvel: "Captain Marvel and the Mystery of the Expanding Island"

Martin K Smartton is the (self-described) World’s “Greatest” Salesman, trying to sell Mr. Morris a resort cottage with a decent view of the city, but won’t stop talking. Mr. Morris buys the cottage if only to make him stop talking, finding it’s the last piece of property for sale on Paradise Island. Martin, now by himself, finds that he has no one to talk to (and starts talking to himself,) deciding that he’ll have to make Paradise Island larger so he can keep selling land on it. He decides to go find his Molecular Expansion Machine he made in college, ignoring that it’s apparently illegal to expand the land of your island. Mr. Morris and Billy go to get some water from a nearby well, but find the well seems to be almost running away from them until Mr. Morris stops short and falls into the well himself. Billy Batson calls SHAZAM to summon Captain Marvel, who drags Mr. Morris to safety. They soon figure out that the island has doubled in size, but that the expansion has managed to rip their cottage in half. Captain Marvel goes to confront Martin, but he makes up some nonsensical cosmic excuse for what “caused” the island to expand, forcing even Captain Marvel to get irritated to leave and returns Billy to go do something about it.

Billy hears Martin’s giant crazy machine in his house, but is knocked out from behind by Martin, who leaves him staked out and gagged in the wilderness where he’ll get ripped apart by the expanding island. Billy manages to snap one of the ropes with a rock under it and removes his gag to call SHAZAM and summons Captain Marvel, who smashes Martin’s Molecular Expansion Machine and punches him over. Martin is forced to pay for the damages and Paradise Island is returned to normal. The next day, Mr. Morris decides to build a pipe system so he doesn’t have to work to get water to his resort cottage every day.

Synopsis for Capt. Kid: "The Captain of the Team"

Captain Kid shows off a football he won in a Charity Raffle and Pudgy offers he start a team. Captain Kid names himself Captain (since he has the football) and Quarterback. Pudgy points out he has no experience, but Captain Kid says that two years ago, he was on the Podunk Wildcats with him some time ago. Pudgy points out that he didn’t do anything on the team (he’s the scorekeeper) and Captain Kid never won a single point. Captain Kid defends that he couldn’t memorize all the signals (and never made a system of his own.) They point out that Captain Kid has the “longest run” in Podunk Team History too: he ran 300 yards out off the field after he kicked himself in the head. Recovering his fumble, he ran for the other side and won 6 points in a different game. Captain Kid offers Pudgy be Captain and Quarterback, and that he’ll be Coach, offering the rest of the team try out tackling practice on Pudgy. They do as Pudgy thinks how you can’t get the best of Captain Kid!

Notes

  • Despite the cover:
    • Sivana doesn't have a particularly convincing Captain Marvel Voodoo Doll. It also doesn't make a BOING noise.
    • A Blond Man isn't needed to be saved from the Expanding Paradise Island
    • Mr. Morris doesn't become a small white-haired baby twofold, since he has black hair in his youth and doesn't reach that age before he's cured of his youthful plague.

Trivia

  • Miss Jameson has changed her hair from her normal blond up-do for a now more orange bob hairstyle.
  • This issue's Paradise Island seems to be a small, expensive, rural resort island in the New York Harbor, as opposed to DC Comics' Paradise Island
