Synopsis for Captain Marvel: "Hand of Horror"

A barge is out on the unexplored waters of the Swamp Sinister, which is believed to be taboo. Aboard is Betty, a brave young woman working with a crew of archaeologists and also Billy Batson, Boy Broadcaster of Station WHIZ. They are here to find evidence of some kind of “ancient monster” there and the barge is suddenly rocked violently by alligators ramming into them, sending Betty overboard! Billy calls SHAZAM, summoning Captain Marvel who shoves the alligators aside with a log and drags Betty to safety. He decides to dive into the muck himself and drags out what looks like a dead giant found preserved in the swamp, which they decide to research more tomorrow. That night, Billy recalls something was clearly pulling them into the swamp and hears a weird sloppy noise and screams from a nearby tent. Calling SHAZAM, Captain Marvel soon finds what he believes in the dark to be some form of python coiled around Betty and wrenches her away from it. It escapes into the night, but in the morning, they find it’s seemingly more like a giant hand, since it leaves very in-depth fingerprints in “walking” around. They clean off the giant and find it’s indeed missing a hand just before the animated hand lunges at them from the brush and begins attacking the scientists again. Billy calls SHAZAM a third time and summons Captain Marvel, who is distracted when it punches him into a tree and throws a whole constructed tent into him, then leaps into the swamp. He reasons that this is a good reason that this swamp might be considered “taboo” and decides to send Billy in as bait to lure this creature out again. That night, Billy heads out to look for the Hand, only to be hit in the head by a rock and thrown into the swamp, where he wakes up. The Hand returns to the Swamp Giant, which revives its whole body. Billy manages to strip his clothes off to get to the surface of the water without drowning and call SHAZAM, summoning Captain Marvel, who punches the Swamp Giant back into the swamp to return to sleep, defeated. Later, Billy signs off with Betty saying that they got plenty of pictures of the giant beforehand and that it’s probably some kind of strange unexplained magic.

Synopsis for Captain Marvel: "Capt. Marvel Fights the Mongol Blood-Drinkers"

Billy's panting and sweating on the air, begging for blood, but because he'd been awake, constantly broadcasting for more than twenty-four hours to encourage Americans to donate blood for the war effort in Korea. Captain Marvel flies the blood donations to the front personally, but as soon as he's there a coven of Mongolian vampires try to steal it. The North Koreans had offered an alliance with the promise of stealing blood stores from American army camps. The hero drives them off, but changes back to Billy to make the vampires show themselves. Because Billy's still sleep-deprived, he collapses from exhaustion while he's on watch. The vampires return, capture the unconscious Billy and all the donated blood supply. Back at their lair, Billy manages to hook his gag on the lone guard's fangs and say his magic word. He goes back to deal with the vampires trying to wipe out the American army camp, scaring them into flying back to their lair by carrying a glowing hunk of the sun. With the vampires cornered, Captain Marvel uproots a tree and uses it as a wooden stake to kill all of them at once.

Synopsis for Captain Marvel: "Captain Marvel battles Viking Villainy!"

On the Atlantic Coast, Billy Batson is out with Dexter Knox to investigate an abandoned stone tower on a beachside with Dexter’s Past-O-Scope, which can just look into the past. He soon finds that it’s been around since the Pre-Columbian Era, but things before that get “foggy” beforehand, which he cannot see past. Billy notices that a giant rock is about to fall and kill his brainy best friend and calls SHAZAM to summon Captain Marvel to kick it out of his way. Together, Dexter Knox and Captain Marvel find that turning it towards the sea showed there was some kind of Viking ship filled with children caught in a storm. To look into this further, Captain Marvel flies to the Rock of Eternity to reach the year 999 CE and discovers a Viking fishing boat, but no children and no storm, which also serves to make it harder to find out when it might happen. He heads to the last known Viking settlement in Greenland where Vikings led by Olaf the Black are already kidnapping children in bags and carrying them to a ship of stolen children. Captain Marvel names himself “Marvel the Red” and says he’s seeing red when he punches Olaf over and only stops due to a giant glacier nearly falling on them, which he punches into tiny chunks. Looking back, the Vikings have disappeared into a thick fog and are nowhere to be found. Captain Marvel returns to Greenland and consults with its Chieftain, Eric the Red, and finds that Olaf has been kidnapping children for ransom for some time now, including his own son Lief.

Later, Billy Batson has been returned and is kidnapped by Olaf the Black in order for Billy to find out where the kids are and is led to a giant hollowed iceberg. Olaf notices he’s not a Viking child and punches him in the jaw, knocking him out. He is quick in deciding he’s a child of a slave and throws him off the iceberg tied to a large rock. Billy manages to grab on to the side of the iceberg and is dragged naturally up to the surface where he calls SHAZAM and Captain Marvel punches his way into the ice and whips Olaf the Black into the wall by his horned helmet. Olaf laughs that he’s won by sending the kids on his ship into the fog anyways where he’ll never find them, but Captain Marvel soon finds them in the storm as Dexter predicted and pushes them to the closest place he can find, which ends up being America! Lief Ericson, a sprightly blond child among them, becomes one of the first American settlers from Europe. Later, Billy returns to the site and tells Dexter that Lief Ericson left the tower there as a marker a mile high left there for him to follow left by none other than Captain Marvel!

Trivia

  • The Mongol Blood-Drinkers might be inspired by the Mongolian Aniukha, a blood-drinking creature more similar to a chupacabra in shape, though they also have a considerable weakness to being stabbed in the heart with a wooden stake.
  • In real life, Chieftain Leif Erikson didn't found Vinland and was likely in his 30s when he arrived there in roughly 999 CE. It also seems to be a very balmy October winter in Newfoundland in this version.
