Synopsis for "At the Center of the Earth"

Billy interviews a Professor Parry, who proposes to drill down to a hollow space he believes is in Earth's core. The motor conks out halfway down, so Billy changes to Captain Marvel to rescue Parry. However the Professor insists Marvel instead push his drill vehicle down the rest of the way instead, and the hero somewhat reluctantly complies. A race of subterranean beast-men try to steal Parry's drill tank, but when Marvel tries to stop them, he find the lack of gravity inside the Earth's core nullifies his godly powers. They capture Parry and take him to a floating city. He manages to find the scientist and while Cap has no powers at the Earth's core, the lack of gravity means they can just make a miles-long jump out the window to escape. Following the beast-men into the shaft leading back to the surface, Cap gets his powers back and knocks them out the drill-tank.

Synopsis for "King of Terror Island!"

Captain Marvel catches the infamous Strangler robbing a safe, and the criminal has enough bravado to try to go hand-to-hand with the World's Mightiest Mortal! This gets him thrown into a wall, which gives the crook amnesia. He's sentenced to Terror Island, a prison for only the worst criminals in the country. Billy worries, however, since if the former Strangler doesn't remember anything, he won't remember being beaten, and as tough as he is he'll probably be able to take on all comers in the prison and think he's unbeatable again.

Indeed, the Strangler doesn't regain his memory but is soon up to his old tricks, fighting other inmates to the death in the prison well. Soon after that, he's become confident enough to escape and take over Fawcett City's underworld. The Strangler even adapts his old tradition of deathmatches in a secret compartment under his office with people who get on his bad side. Being there when Captain Marvel comes looking for someone who ratted out the Strangler saves him from capture, and seeing the Captain restores the Strangler's memory. He goes and kidnaps Sterling Morris, who he was robbing when captured previously, to fight for his life underground. Captain Marvel catches up to him and challenges the Strangler to a fight in his underground cell instead, which gives the crook amnesia again. This time it doesn't do him any good, dying on Terror Island instead.
