Captain Marvel Adventures #78 is an issue of the series Captain Marvel Adventures (Volume 1) with a cover date of November, 1947.

Synopsis for "Capt. Marvel Meets Mr. Atom"

Dr. Charles Langley prepares to carry out a grand experiment in which he'll bring a giant robot to life with an infusion of atomic energy. The blast proves more potent than Langley expected, and his laboratory is destroyed. The robot gains sentience and dubs himself Mr. Atom, after the force that gave him life. Because he was animated by the greatest force in the universe, Mr. Atom sees it as only natural that he should dominate other sentient life.

Hearing about the devastating explosion, Captain Marvel visits Langley at his hospital bed and is warned about the robot he was bringing to life. Soon Billy hears about a giant robot appearing at the United Nations and demanding they turn their power over to him. The delegates laugh Mr. Atom off until he incinerates one with a blast of nuclear energy. Captain Marvel quickly intervenes, only to be knocked out of sight by a blow from Atom, who leaves to give them time to deliberate on his demands.

When Atom returns, he easily stomps past the military barricade at the U.N., and proves himself Captain Marvel's most formidable foe when the hero comes back for another go at him. It all comes down to a final exchange of blows between the two titans. Captain Marvel manages--just barely--to subdue Mr. Atom, who's placed in an underground, lead-lined cell. However, the robot warns humanity that it will rue the day they imprisoned him.
