The Atom made his debut in the Golden Age of Comics as a 5'1" boxer turned "Mystery Man" nicknamed the Mighty Mite, who eventually developed super-strength and an Atomic Punch. Subsequent heroes have taken the concept one step further and actually had the ability to shrink, some down to the atomic and sub-atomic level.
