Listen, Ellen, I've been doing some thinking over the last couple of months... about my Animal Man powers and stuff... and, well, I've come to a decision. I want to go full time into the super-hero business.
Marvin Gaye is alive! I mean, something is wrong with the world. Of course it's great that he's not dead, but he should be... or else something is wrong with my perception of how the world ought to be...
You're the key to this, aren't you? The Missing Link? Do you know I defecated in a hotel lobby this morning? Then climbed a tree and chewed leaves? Do you know my wife's having an affair with an English professor? An English professor! That's like your woman running off with... with a baboon or something.
It's funny... the link is definitely degrading... I can feel it... It's not just the bird power... The whole connection to the field is breaking down. There's confusion... like something is getting in the way... a strange presence...
Animals animals animals... Animals... Animals... How I love the animals... Hi, little Oodly Boodley. Animals are smarter than people, wouldn't you agree? I'm gonna miss you guys... But I don't keep prisoners... SCRAM!''
Ellen, there was... meaning... in the power. Like... truth... You know, like seeing how everything is connected... Like there's an eye that watches over... everything... An intelligence.. and I... merged with it... For an hour... I became that intelligence... This god-like intelligence at the heart of nature--
These other life-forms which I push by and through don't seem distressed as they wend their inevitable way down to drink willing draughts of oblivion. They've accepted their fates. Not me, though. I'm Buddy Baker-- and I'm not dead yet.
If I could trace the dinosaur's evolutionary branch back through its genetic memory to our shared pint of origin, could I re-evolve myself and be born again? It's so crazy I can't believe I'm thinking it-- but the fact that I'm thinking at all is crazy in itself.
You're just assuming that a rat's life is somehow less important than a human life. Who's to say that's true? Think about it for a minute. What makes a human being any more important to the universe than a rat? I mean, think about it.
Hmmmm... Misfits. Misfits and freaks, people like us, are our best hope. Sports of nature, mutations-- that's where evolutionary change is sparked. Maybe we should build an ark, gather as many far-out weirdos on it as we can and wait for the deluge...
Everything happens at once. Creatures in infinite variety are giving birth, mating, defecating, ejaculating, fighting, eating, and dying. They're doing it constantly, endlessly... and they're doing it in my head. It's a pretty strange trip, I tell ya.
There I was in the wilderness -- attacking a ten-ton elephant that had gone berserk! A fool-hardy action for any man -- any normal man. But you see, I was more than that -- I had suddenly found myself gifted with incredible abilities that no mortal man had ever known, for... I was the man with animal powers.
