Celestine Babcock was a spiritual medium and the mother of Kent Nelson, who would become the sorcerous hero known as Doctor Fate.

Born in Salem in the late 19th century, Celestine's birth killed her mother and during her life, her father often blamed her for her mother's death. While growing up, she formed a close bond with her brother Aaron, who dreamt of becoming a inventor like his idol, Thomas Edison, but was denied it due to the Babcock family's vocation for generation consisting of working within law. As a child, she would display an affinity for mystical abilities although unknown to her, her brother would subconsciously project his powers into his sister to avoid further disapproval from his father and the two began exploring the occult unknown to their father.[1]

After the death of their father, Aaron would become obsessed with expanding her powers as a medium and she began to no longer regard her powers as a blessing. On August 12th of 1910, she would meet a stranger from the future, who would be her savior when her brother constructed a machine capable of amplifying her powers as a medium through the Helm of Fate and the Amulet of Anubis. As the stranger defeats Aaron as he kills himself and is absorbed into the Amulet of Anubis, Celestine flees from the burning home. She would remain unaware of her power's true origin and the stranger being her future son.[1]

Later in her life, Celestine Babcock married Sven Nelson and had a son named Kent Nelson, who would later go on to become Doctor Fate.[2] Kent has mentioned that she died prior to this happening.[3]
