Cerberus is the ferocious three headed hell hound that guards the Bronze Gates of the Underworld.
History
Cerberus only has an appetite only for live meat and thus allows only the spirits of the dead to enter the Underworld, but he allows none to leave. Cerberus is Hades' loyal watchdog.
Only a few mortals could leave or enter Underworld without the permission of Hades, among them who have made it past Cerberus are:
- Orpheus the son of the muse Caliope who, after returning from his adventures with the Argonauts, discovered that his beloved Eurydice had died, and went to Hades to rescue her. He was met by Cerberus, but, with his music, Orpheus mesmerized the beast, and gained access to the Underworld.[1]
- Steve Trevor and Sofia Constantinas could pass him because Glitch bit the creature in his tail.[2]
- Aquaman cut off Cerberus' head and used it to break down the gates of the underworld.[3]
